Wow... These books are just great! This is not the first in the series, so If you haven't already read the others I suggest you read them first. The characters in these books are funny and entertaining. They have great chemistry that makes reading about their lives really fun. Suspenseful and funny all in one book. A great read!

I LOVE this Series! 11 Aug. 2012
By S. Collier - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Jenn McKinlay's "Cupcake Bakery" series is one of the most funny and interesting series currently available in the cozy genre. I especially loved "Red Velvet" revenge because it captures the spirit of the old west in a storyline that extends beyond the Valley of the Sun and up into the Arizona foothills for a spectacular rodeo chock full of family drama.

In "Red Velvet Revenge," Mel and Angie are faced with a slump at the bakery. The summer heat has driven tourists and locals inside and the foot traffic in Old Town Scottsdale, where the bakery is located, is almost non-existent. When Oz, their trusty assistant shows up with an old ice cream truck, he hopes to turn into a mobile version of Fairytale Cupcakes, Mel and Angie are a bit skeptical, but decide to move forward, if only to better compete with their archival, Olivia. As they are taking a test drive, the truck breaks down and they are rescued by the owners and organizers of one of Arizona's largest rodeo events - Slim and Tammy Hazard. They are soon hired to come up to Juniper Pass, a bucolic location in the Arizona Foothills, to sell cupcakes during the annual rodeo. With business slow, they jump at the opportunity and head north, once the truck is repaired and prepped for mobile bakery use, with Oz, Marty (their other assistant) and business partner Tate in tow.

All is not fun and games at the rodeo, and soon they are dealing with the attempted murder of Slim, the shenanigans of his daughter Shelby, who is out to wreck the festivities due to her so-called "social consciousness," and a rodeo start, Ty Stokes, whose huge ego could spell the end of the rodeo as everyone knows it. When one of the key players in this drama turns up dead, Mel, Angie and their team find themselves in the cross-hairs of local law enforcement as suspects in the murder. Adding to their problems, someone tried to sabotage the bakery truck and it takes some quick thinking on their part to salvage the inventory.

In "Red Velvet Revenge," McKinlay also has a few surprises in store for the reader concerning both Mel's and Angie's romantic interests!

"Red Velvet Revenge" is a page-turner and I found it hard to put down! I can't wait for the next one in this delightful series!

Red Velvet Revenge 16 Aug. 2012

#55 Book Read in 2012
Red Velvet Revenge by Jenn McKinlay

This book is the fourth installment in one of my favorite cozy mystery series. In this book, Mel and Angie decide to bring their cupcake van to a rodeo to sell their cupcakes. As always when they are involved, there is drama at the rodeo and someone turns up dead. Mel begins to investigate the death and of course gets herself in trouble. Along with the murder mystery, the romance of Mel and Joe moves forward. Angie and Tate's unspoken love for each other moves forward in its own way as well. Along for the ride are Oz and Marty.

I enjoy this series. The characters are interesting and I love how they all care for each other. There is a good balance between mystery and romance, with humor thrown in for good measure. I did miss Captain Jack's antics in this book. Hopefully in the next one, he gets more page time.

I highly recommend this series.

Couldn't Put It Down 17 July 2012
By Chris - Published on Amazon.com

Jenn McKinlay is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book only reinforced that. It was a page turner from the beginning and my only disappointment in the book was that it had to end. I loved it...simply loved it. I was so happy to see some movement in the Tate/Angie/Roach story and the ending left me dying to read the next one already! I did spend the entire book craving cupcakes and cake pops. The settings are created just perfectly...descriptive enough so that you feel like you are there but not so much that it gets in the way of the story and becomes filler. The plot flowed perfectly and I was kept guessing right until the end as to the identity of the culprit. This is a must read.

Cupcakes and BBQ, that's no bull. 3 July 2012
By F. Yoder - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is the 4Th book in the A Cupcake Bakery Mystery series. It just might be the best one, too.

Angie and Melanie, owners of the Fairy tale Cupcakes bakery, are riding with Oz and Marty in a recycled Good Humor van that Oz has recently purchased. They are discussing how it can become the bakery delivery van when the van breaks down. Shortly after Slim Hazard. who heads the Juniper Pass Rodeo, stops to help. Once Slim learns of their bakery, he talks them into becoming a vendor at the upcoming rodeo. Angie and Mel set out baking cupcakes for the event, while some favors are called in to make the van road worthy.

They arrive in their decked out cupcake van, to find themselves assigned a spot next to Billy Bobs BBQ. Much to there displeasure Billy Bob's busy smoking the meat for tomorrows opening. Billy Bob's BBQ owners Billy and Bob are beside themselves at being next to cupcake vendor. Angie, who can have a bit of a temper, agrees to put their total sale against Billy Bob's, and the loser needs to work the others site.

Now that they set up for tomorrow's opening they head into town to check in at their hotel, that is over the local saloon. As they are watching the parade for the opening of the rodeo, from there balcony, Slim Hazard is shot in the shoulder. It turns out to be just a minor injury and is back the next day for the opening on the rodeo. It is thought that some cowboy in the audience had just gotten carried away and shot his gun in the air, but Melanie and her coworkers just couldn't see that happening. Then later Mel bumps into the star of the rodeo, Ty Stokes. Stokes who is three sheets to the wind and when he realizes who she is wants a dozen cupcakes delivered to his room. As Mel and Angie are looking for Ty to deliver his cupcakes, they find Ty in a bull's pen, apparently gored to death. Granted their encounter hadn't been the best, but because of that they don't want suspicion to fall upon them.

In addition to wanting to investigate the death of Ty, they have another problem. It seems that the electricity hook-up hook up to their van had been unplugged and most if not all of the cupcakes have thawed. Mel comes up with a recipe for cake pops to save the day and cupcakes.

Of course there is an update of the love interests of Mel and Angie. this a very enjoyable series and an interesting cast of characters. For the movie buffs, there is a selection of lines movies to guess what movie they came from.

Looking forward to the next in the series.
