This is a bargain basement re-release of the original Velvet Redux VHS. The DVD version doesn't seem to have been available for a while, so it's a worthwhile buy for the DVD which I've always considered to be one of the best concert DVDs I've ever seen. I've been listening to the Velvets sine the early seventies and it's good to finally see them play.

But (now tell me you didn't see that coming) the audio CD is a disgrace. Same tracks as the DVD, yet in a different order and brutally edited. Sometimes the editing simply removes crowd noise at either end of the track, which gives the CD a seventies bootleg feel, but Hey Mr Rain loses four minutes, and Some Kinda Love is truncated to less than half of its original length. The audio CD is in no way a replacement for even the single disc version of the original live album.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this concert contains the best ever version of Pale Blue Eyes. Not because of Lou Reed's vocals, which are a little on the messy side, but because of John Cale's emotion-drenched viola performance - his solos could make a stone weep.

Two stars deducted for the blasphemous editing on the audio CD...
