Product Description

Independent on Sunday, Travel Section

"Attention to both mundane and technical detail is highly impressive." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Daily Telegraph, UK

Press comment on Tom Sheppard's earlier books on operation of four wheel drive vehicles THE LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE Editions 1 and 2:

"His writing is superb. The most complex subjects are explained with striking clarity and simplicity supported with summary side notes and ... hundreds of attractive drawings and pictures. Most surprising is the quality of the excellent all-colour photography, which combines high information content with stunning locations and artistic merit." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and comprehensive - Expeditions in a nutshell, 3 Nov 2003
By
Mr. S. J. Watson "Sam Watson" (York or Cairo) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide: 2nd Edition, Field Manual (Paperback)
This is a carefully thought-out and written guide to using a 4x4 as a base for expeditions in arduous terrain. It is endorsed by the Royal Geographical Society and written by one of Britain's foremost desert and overland explorers, Squadron Leader Tom Sheppard.
It has been written to update and further his first (now hard to find) volume of the same title; it also includes some information from his Royal Geographical Society pamphlet on Desert Expeditions. Much of the content of the former is reproduced however there are notable updates which make it very much worth buying.
Whether you are travelling to mountain, desert or jungle environments with your 4x4 this is required reading. It is extremely comprehensive and authoritative and written with an understated, eloquent style that is sadly lacking in many outdoor books today.
If you are contemplating an overland trip or the equipping of a vehicle for such, this is the only book you will need to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on the market for this job, 11 April 2002
By
Mr. S. J. Watson "Sam Watson" (York or Cairo) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are several books that cover this topic. None so thorough. Yes, this is published in part by Land Rover. No, that does not affect the content. Tom Sheppard has been there and done it, whether in 4x4 or on motorbike. This is *indispensable*. It covers everything from team selection through to after-expedition reports, including exhaustive details of vehicle and equipment choice and modifications. Unbiased, dry and factual, with a smattering of humour from an RAF officer turned expeditions expert. Very, very good.

Partly includes stuff from the Royal Geographical Society 'Desert Expeditions' book, updated, but also other stuff. Together with an area-specific guide for the GPS locations (eg Chris Scott's Sahara guide, also on Amazon, though some of Scott's conclusions on equipment and vehicles are questionable) this is all you need for exploration of an area.

This is *the* all-time classic manual for exploration of arduous terrain by vehicle. By-the-by its also a hell of a travel book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expedition? Buy this book before you buy ANYTHING else!, 18 April 2001
By A Customer
Excellent book covering all aspects of a vehicle based expedition/overland trip. Essential reading in the early stages of project planning and definately read it before making any major purchases such as a 4x4 vehicle. An ecxellent book for someone new to this field of endeavour.
