Product Description

Product Description

How does what we eat affect us and our world? Is there a connection between vegetarianism and living a spiritual life? Doesn t the HH the Dalai Lama eat meat? A trained vet, respected teacher and happy vegan, Bodhipaksa answers all of these questions and more. Tackling issues such as genetically modified vegetables and modern ways of producing food he dispels widespread myths and reflects upon the diets dominant in the contemporary West. In comparison, he considers the diets of wandering monks in Ancient India and the diet of the Buddha himself. By considering why people eat meat and relating this to Buddhist ethics he explores habits and the possibility of change. He takes a positive view of the benefits of vegetarianism, and shows practically, how to maintain a healthy and balanced vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. This exploration shows how a meat-free life can not only lighten the body but also the soul. Examines key issues in life from a Buddhist perspective, offering practical points on living in the 21st century.

I became vegan before becoming Buddhist - the two seemed inextricably linked with their celebration of life and promotion of compassion for all beings and the environment. Imagine my shock to find meat-eating Buddhists. I'm not talking about subsistence peasants in Tibet but relatively wealthy Western and Eastern practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. Whatever the spirituality or philosophy, most human beings have a 'bodyswerve' tendency when our comfort zones are threatened and we are good at finding excuses to keep on doing what we want:o) So we need kindly but honest explanations about how and why we can do better. It was deeply reassuring to find Bodhipaksha's short, uncomplicated book that explained why eating animal products isn't really a good idea if one aspires to a Buddhist - or indeed, any kind of compassionate life. He trained as a vet so knows what he is talking about. There are other great Buddhist veggie writers, such as Norm Phelps and Will Tuttle and if you are interested in finding out more, check them out too. But Bodhipaksa is an excellent starting place. I like the new cover design also!
