..and I do recommend it. However, I need to say immediately that this review is not based on extensive practical use of the book. I haven't cooked from it yet - although that is only 24 hours away if my plans work out and I can decide on what is the most attractive recipe!!
Physically this is a handsome piece of book production - solid, well illustrated and with multiple bookmarks to ensure you know where you are. It is organised by season and then by vegetable within season - with several recipes ranging from the complex to the simple for each. There is a short glossary which is useful but very little editorial comment - just lots of recipes. At last I know what to do with cardoons! Some of the organisation is a bit odd - recipe notes which contain some important information are on the last page together with the publishing details.
No author - as far as I can see - is credited and it seems to be a translation of Italian books which have been around for some time but have been updated for this edition.
My copy is pristine - I suspect it won't be in a few weeks since I have seen several recipes that I really want to try.
I will come back to update the review later when I have more practical experience with it. But if you are looking for a handsome present - this will do it!
More later
Update: well, I have now cooked several recipes from the book. First point to make is they they all worked, they all tasted good and I will make them again. And I could follow thhe instructions without difficulty although occasionally there was a bit of interpretative guesswork taking place.
I did find that the cooking times tended to be a bit short - almost everything needed longer than the recipe indicated - particularly the dishes involving the oven. This may be my cooker (although the thermometer says the temperatures are as they should be) or simply that the vegetables I am using are a little older and maybe less flavourful than those available in Italy.
Anyway, certainly a keeper and I will continue to use it - but it will sit alongside Annie Bell, Marcella Hazan and Sophie Grigson rather than replacing them.
I still think it is a good buy if you can find it at a reasonable price and it IS a beautiful book.
