"I love Carolyn Mackler!" Judy Blume"

Product Description

Mara Valentine is in control. She's a straight-A student, a strict vegan and she's heading to Yale in the fall. So when her slutty, weed-smoking, sixteen-year-old niece - yes, niece - V comes to live with the family, Mara is horrified. Even more so when she starts dreaming about grilled cheese sandwiches every night and realizes she is falling for James, her boss. Unable to ignore these unfamiliar cravings, Mara starts to give into them a little and in doing so discovers her sexuality, redefines her relationship with her over-anxious parents and realizes that V could in fact be a potential friend and ally.

If you're a young vegan buying this book expecting to relate really well with the main character, then think again.
The implicit message in this book is definitely anti-vegan. Mara openly admits that her veganism is a way of distracting herself - she basically says that she does it to be in control of her life (...because she's control freak) But when she starts to loosen up a little, she starts to eat chocolate and cheese and eggs. Nothing at all is mentioned in the book about animal welfare and in the end we are left feeling as though veganism is somehow boring and dull.
However if you like a love story and some family drama, then you might like it.

My review of the book, 'vegan, virgin, valentine'
By Carolyn Mackler

When I received this book I couldn't wait to get started, I've already read 'The earth, my butt, and other big round things' and it was fantastic, so I was expecting the same from this.
To start of with the book cover was eye-catching, it was different with a good use of bright, colourful words that immediately draw your attention. Then to make the book even better by the end of the first page I was completely hooked. I finished the book within 2 days after enjoying a funny story with a fantastic plot, characters and a special similarity to some peoples lives.
In this story Carolyn Mackler manages to look upon a teenagers life with humour and light heartedness. But somehow making the plot into a deep and meaningful story. I would recommend this story to a girl aged 13 and over.
This book looks at the life of Mara valentine and how her life changes dramatically when her 16 year old tearaway niece, 'V' comes to live with her and her family. Things seem to spin out of control, and along the way she loses friends, gains some, gets herself a new boyfriend and most importantly finds out that straight A grades mean nothing if her future is something she doesn't want.
This is a fantastic story that everyone will enjoy!

pretty good book 20 Sep 2004

Format:Paperback
Vegan, Virgin, Valentine
Judging by the title I really didn't expect to enjoy this book, I thought that the
central character would be a total loser who had no friends, but as it turns out she
had some character traits which everyone can identify with- she feels guilty when she
goes out with her friend's crush, she stresses about exams and feels really pressured
by her parents. This makes it sound like a really angsty book, but its not, mostly she's
really positive and has a good time (but sometimes doesn't realise it) despite the fact
she feels really stressed. I read this just before my exams and it really helped me
put things in perspective and chill out a bit- I reccomend this book to all teenage
girls even if you don't like the stupid title.
