There is some OK information here for someone just starting as either a vegan or as an athlete however someone might like to tell the author that honey is not, and will not ever be, vegan. They somehow manage to get this substance into most of their recipes. I know you can often substitute it with something else but this is true of most ingredients so they may as well just add egg and cheese to the ingredients.
Leave the bees alone.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives some great training plans and talks extensively about nutrition. It even gives food plans too. I'd recommend it.

HASH(0x91fc7144) out of 5 stars a good attempt 27 Jan. 2013

let me just say first that i really admire Brett Stewart and have enjoyed his books and followed the routines he's created.
So, when The Vegan Athlete was coming out i pre ordered it. I have been vegan for a year now and have been searching for
"the one" book that sums up health, fitness, and nutrition on a vegan diet for the average person. Yes, I've read Brendan Brazier's books and they are very informative but hard to work into everyday life.
Author Ben Greene gives a whole hearted effort presenting the social and environmental reasons to become vegan and how to try to transition yourself into the vegan lifestyle but it seems like an unnecessary large part of the book. If you want to be a vegan, get a book on that. I wanted this book to be about If you are a vegan and want to work on strength and endurance and the foods that will help you achieve your goals
As with Stewart's other books he focuses on body weight exercises and most of them are printed in his "7 weeks to getting ripped"(which is a great book by the way). This book could have been the grail for me and i really wanted to be,but it lacks the information that the title promises.

HASH(0x92ab49a8) out of 5 stars Uninspiring, half-hearted look at Vegan nutrition 10 April 2013
By Jazz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I'm very sorry to say I did not enjoy this book. For starters, it was a great deal thinner (few pages) than I would have expected a book on athletic nutrition and was all in black and white - which for me (being very visual) is a boo-boo. Honestly, it seemed as though it was written by someone who is not vegan and or had no enthusiasm/love for veganism at all. Some of the recipes include honey, which if you are a strict vegan you would not use and neglected to mention that honey can be easily substituted with Agave syrup, or molasses. There are very few inspiring recipe's mentioned (only 16 if I recall) and a large section of the book is just various physical exercises you can do for health, which could be found in any fitness book whether you're vegan or not! I think for a serious athlete or budding vegan, there are plenty of other, much more inspiring books that would better help you achieve your goals.

HASH(0x92a9e900) out of 5 stars Great intro to veganism + More 2 Feb. 2013
By barb - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I thought this was a great introduction to veganism, but more importantly, it inspired simply a healthy lifestyle. It was informative and friendly. It confirmed things I already knew, but added so much more to the plate! While I am neither vegetarian nor vegan, this book gave me plenty of food for thought! All puns aside, authors Ben and Brett show how eating healthy and exercising moderately can really make a difference in the quality of our lives. The exercises were straight forward, and the start-up programs were realistic. Even the 2 week vegan diet plan was definitely worth a try. If you're trying to lose weight, or just want to live healthier, The Vegan Athlete is a great place to start, as well as continue if you're no longer a beginner.Good recipes at the back too, and ideas for substituting ingredients to your existing recipes. That was pretty cool.

HASH(0x91fc757c) out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for. 23 Jun. 2013
By Riddle350 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I rated this 3 out of fairness. Personally I would only rate this 2 stars but for someone new to being healthy they could potentially rate this book much higher. If you've been vegan for awhile then you don't need this book. If you are at all physically active than you very much don't need this book. Everything found here is only appropriate for someone who ha no idea where to start with veganism and healthy. It's almost like the For Dummies series of books but much shorter. I was hoping for an in depth guide to endurance training and the proper nutrition guide for that type of training. Make sure you know what you are looking for in a book before buying this one.

HASH(0x91fc772c) out of 5 stars Informative and easy and easy to read 4 Feb. 2013
By kmpham - Published on Amazon.com

The title Vegan Athlete truly sums up the point of this book. It clearly explains what you need to know if you are an athlete and wanting to move to being a vegan. I have been a vegan for many years and felt the information was presented in a way that was not offensive or overwhelming for non vegans. The exercise section would be very helpful to some one wanting to start exercising while becoming a vegan. The recipes were great! We make the hot chocolate recipe almost every day. This book is an easy to understand guide that serves as a reminder to those already vegan and easy to follow path for those looking to try being a vegan. This is a great book that I would recommend to all athletes.
