Aloe vera (Latin - Aloe Barbadensis) is a member of the Liliaceae plant family and is also known by the Chinese as the "harmony remedy".It is a perennial, droughtresisting plant indigenous to Eastern and Southern Africa and is now cultivated extensively worldwide.Aloe's thick green-grey lance shaped leaves grows from a short stalk near ground level in a rosette pattern and is often mistaken as a cactus. Aloe vera is referred to in many scriptures all over the world, records of its use dates back to over 3,500 years. It was first mentioned in the Egyptian Papyrus Ebers (c.1550 B.C.) for its beneficial and embalming value, and it is also mentioned in the Bible (John 19:39) that a mixture of myrrh and aloes was used to embalm the body of Christ.Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socotra in order to have the aloe for his army and it is believed that Queen Cleopatra and Nefartiti attributed their beauty to it.Aloe vera contains more than two hundred beneficial ingredients including vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and enzymes.Aloe vera may be beneficial as a colon cleanser, to maintain a healthy skin and for its protective properties.
