A Greek immigrant apparently succumbs to sudden overwhelming pneumonia, while an obese Afro-American woman collapses with acute respiratory distress. When an unexpected coincidence suggest to Jack that these seemingly unrelated deaths are actually connected murders, his colleagues and superiors remain sceptical. Meanwhile he is taking himself deeper into deadly danger - but can he reach the heart of the puzzle before Davydov and his associates unleash into the streets of New York the ultimate terror: a modern bio-weapon!

Most writers set up the villains as pretty challenging characters (such as occurs in the James Bond novels). Robin Cook has pulled a reverse of that and put together some of the most incompetent villains ever. Despite their incompetence, they make great progress towards unleashing a bioweapon on Manhattan. This reversal added a comic element (not too far from the Keystone Kops) that made the novel much more entertaining than it would otherwise have been.

The developing attraction between Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery is the other interesting plot element. Laurie meets someone and starts to get serious, which presents nice plot complications that you will enjoy.

As to the main story, it is about as far-fetched as you can imagine except for the relative ease of creating the anthrax-based bioweapon. I hope that the details in the book are not too accurate. I would hate for this book to become a terrorist's training manual.

The characters are relatively vivid. Jack Stapleton's ability to create disorder is charming. This makes for a good read. I hope that Robin Cook will write more novels about Stapleton and Montgomery.

Cook obviously likes people, because he even makes the villains more attractive than they absolutely have to be. That slant on making the characters more sympathetic gives the story an engaging quality that will keep you turning the pages well into the night.

One word of caution. There's some material in here about skinheads that will be very upsetting to some people. If you are easily upset by graphic descriptions of inhumane acts, this is not the book for you. Otherwise, enjoy!

This is the first Robin Cook book I've read and I have to admit that I was highly impressed. I read it in about 4 days and am dying to start Contagion which I picked up at the same time.

The story centers around the seemingly unconnected deaths of a rug importer and an obese African-American female. Dr Jack Stapleton is a Medical Examiner in Manhattan investigating both cases. A workaholic who has a tendency to `poke his nose' where it doesn't belong Jack soon finds surprising results for the deaths of his two patients.

Meanwhile, Russian Yuri Davydov, has gotten tied up with the Peoples Aryan Army, a skinhead movement intent on bringing their government to its knees. The plan is for Yuri to use the skills he acquired in Russia as a technician in a bioweapons factory to manufacture enough anthrax to decimate Manhattan. In return the PAA will supply the materials Yuri needs to exact revenge on the American public for reducing him to a lowly taxi-driver after he tried so hard to reach American and live the "American dream" he had heard so much about.

This was a really engrossing story and one that had me sucked in from the very first page. The story was plausible if somewhat corny in places but all in all it was a brilliant introduction to Robin Cook and a book I'd recommend to anyone who likes thrillers. I especially loved the fact that the ending came in the last few pages.....it really keeps you engrossed until the very end and there was none of the `filler' that some thrillers are reduced to these days to bulk up a book and `fill' it with unnecessary drivel.

This is a great book by robin cook. Several deaths occur, that seem totally unconnected, but you eventually find out they are all intertwined and are linked to one another in some way or other. Robin Cook does well in capturing the audiences attention, and keeps you waiting in suspense for the whole book. This is a great read and I recommend this to anyone who enjoys detective novels, mystery, or just a great read! you won't be disappointed!
