The Vax C86-AW-Pe Air Silence Pet is a cylinder vacuum cleaner that is lightweight, compact and versatile. It’s designed to clean carpets, hard floors and harder to reach areas within the home, it delivers a powerful performance across multiple surfaces and is ideal for pet owners.

The Vax Air Silence Pet cylinder vacuum cleaner also features multi-cyclonic technology, which provides powerful suction across both carpets and hard floors and allows for effective home cleaning. Also equipped with a range of tools that enable above the floor cleaning, the Vax Air Silence Pet offers an easy to use and convenient cleaning solution.

The Vax C86-AW-Pe Air Silence Pet has been engineered in line with the EU’s Eco-design and Energy Labelling regulations for vacuum cleaners, introduced from September 2014. Information about its energy efficiency can be found within the energy label.

What’s the Energy Label For?

From September 2014 all new vacuum cleaners must comply with EU Eco-design and Energy Labelling regulations that dictate how they are designed and labelled. The most visible part of the legislation is the energy label, which will be displayed with every new vacuum cleaner. The purpose of the label is to help you judge how energy efficient the vacuum cleaner is and assess its potential energy costs when compared to other models on the market. It displays information about the vacuum cleaner’s energy efficiency, noise levels, pick-up performance and filtration.

What do the Symbols on the Label Mean?

I needed a new vacuum cleaner so was delighted to be able to try this one. My comments...
    First the negatives.
    - Not sure I understand the packaging... Bits of cardboard seem to have been thrown randomly in the box, not protecting anything but thankfully everything was in good order
    - The extra tools and extensions are loose and cannot be attached. So I need to find a place to store them and remember where they are!
    - While you do not need to buy bags, you will need to replace some of the filters at some stage
    - I cannot find how many watts it is...

    Now the positives
    - A very long lead, so no need to change plug too often to work around the house
    - The main tube is in metal, giving it a very sturdy feel (Dyson's are in plastic as far as I know)
    - It is sort of silent, or let's say it makes less noise than other vacuum cleaners - it is 70 DB - the only one I could find that has a similar level is the Bosch one at 66 DB, so well done!
    - It is easy to operate and follows you around without falling
    - and most of all is does a very good job!

Excellent vac when the price comes down, as it surely will. Needs to be around the £150 mark.

It's quiet and effective, using only 800W and yet doing a great job of sucking up dirt. The turbo head makes it noisier but is only used for picking up hairs and threads (which it does particularly well on upholstery). Allergy sufferers will be pleased by the inclusion of a HEPA filter.I like the length-adjustable metal tubes and it's stable as you drag it around. The power cord retracts neatly into the machine and it's lightweight when you need to carry it (you soon learn not to lift it by the handle on the dust box!).

The only significant negative is absence of on-board storage for tools. I can live with that but have deducted one star.

A have a large Dyson upright that is very heavy and a bit clumsy to haul upstairs. I requested this cylinder Vax because it is lighter and I wanted, among other things, to see whether it was more maneuverable. I have tested it on carpets only (no suitable hard floors).

The good points are: it has very strong suction for such a low powered machine (only 800W); it is much quieter than vacuum cleaners I have experienced before; the automatic cable reeling is excellent, although the cable could be longer (6m); and it has an impressive telescopic chrome extension tube, albeit rather heavy, which contains a slider to adjust the suction.

Unfortunately these are outweighed by a number a negative points. The machine weighs 5.5kg, which is not negligible if you have to pick it up very often and unfortunately that is what I had to do. Although it will `follow' you in a straight line, in practice it frequently gets snagged on furniture and it is not easy to realign it without picking it up. Also, if you are not careful, it can easily tip over. So the Vax failed on two important issues for me. The other negative points are more minor: the on/off button has to be pressed for 2-3 secs before it `takes'; there are two handles, very similar looking, one to carry the machine, the other to open the dust receptacle and it is easy to grab the wrong one; the attachments have to be fitted via a coupling piece which I was for ever taking on and off, and it is not easy to get the friction-fitted fittings off the extension tube; a number of key parts, including the snap clips that attach the hose to the cylinder are plastic, and if they break ....

Good quality effort from Vax. This is the first time I've properly used a trundle-type vacuum cleaner, and also the first to fall foul of the EU directive forbidding anything over a 1600 watt machine. First of all, it isn't silent; second, I was surprised at how large and heavy it is. Perfectly manageable of course, but I suppose I had assumed that anything within the EU limit must be small. Not so - you know this is there, and very well it performs too.

Build-wise, the unit feels sturdy, and it easy to put together for use and remove the dust chamber for emptying. It comes with a very neat, all-metal telescopic funnel, onto which you can plug either the standard brush head (for carpets or hard floors) or additional (included) ends for stubborn areas like cars and stairs (the "turbo tool") or a traditional nook-cleaning accessory.

Results are great - you don't get that sticking-to-the-carpet feeling like you do with some cleaners, but maybe you don't actually need that? Who knows? There is also a suction control on the handle which basically opens a little vent if you need to reduce suction - personally I think that unlikely with this machine, but you never know.

The dust chamber comes away with a pull of the handle, coming away like a bucket - just pop it over your bin, press the blue button, unhinge and it's gone. It's amazing how much dust comes away with even a light clean!

Very good model. Can't comment on the pet element as I don't have any, but as a good, high-quality vacuum cleaner, this will do you very well indeed.
