The authors are to be congratulated on a labour of love. They have given us what must be the definitive book on Vauxhall Gardens, and seem to have hunted up every scrap of information. The book that has been produced is certainly weighty, but that is partly due to the high grade paper used in the printing, which results in excellent quality for the many fascinating illustrations. The study of the Gardens is divided into topics, making for easier reading than a straight historical account. The book is written in an easily readable style, which is not always achieved by scholars who are great experts in their field. The subjects present a microcosm of London's history: transport and access to the Gardens; admission prices and the cost of living; changing tastes in popular entertainment; mass catering; music; prostitution; firework displays; drunkenness; etc etc. It is not a cheap book, but represents good value for money. It is beautifully printed and will give many hours of pleasure.
