Review

This is a reflective, beautifully delivered recital of English song much concerned with death, its nature well suited to this tenor s mellifluously lyrical, emotionally intense music-making. The dark folkish beauties of Vaughan Williams s 1907 Housman settings are balanced by the spare and perhaps for some surprising modernity of his Ten Blake Songs. --Stephen Pettitt, The Sunday Times 29th September 2013

'...a very successful disc, showcasing some very fine English song-cycles in first rate performances.' --Simon Thompson, Music-web Int

5.0 out of 5 stars The presence of Mark Padmore 1 May 2014

I was at the Concert and I was "blown away". The Dove was very moving - the silence in the hall at the end of it said it all!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark Padmore is radiant 21 July 2014
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This collection of song cycles is an excellent way to place the crown of tenor reign firmly on the worthy head of Mark Padmore. His voice continues to amaze - advancing years have done nothing to diminish his beautiful quality of sound nor his communicative skills, so well displayed in these four cycles.

The finest work here is Ralph Vaughan Williams' `On Wenlock Edge' - sung with style and clarity by Padmore accompanied by the Britten Sinfonia , Jacqueline Shave, director, and Huw Watkins at the piano. Oboist Nicholas Daniel joins Pamore for Vaughan Wiliams' Ten Blake Songs' - a conversation piece between tenor and oboe.

Jonathan Dove's brief `The End' a setting or Mark Strand's poem is a debut recording (lovely) and separates the Vaughn Williams works from Peter Warlock's haunting The Curlew'. For whose who love British music for the voice this recording is a must - a combination of the well loved and the unknown well married. Grady Harp, July 14

5.0 out of 5 stars Padmore, rising to the height of his artistry, delivers a moving, mostly reflective album 6 Jun 2014
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"On Wenlock Edge" is one of those magical documents of an age, where Vaughan Williams' music is perfectly attuned to the pastoral verse of A.E. Housman, capturing the Edwardian-Georgian mood in the same rich way that Elgar. "Pastoral" doesn't convey the depth of bitterness, longing, and sorrow that permeates this song cycle. Mark Padmore's approach verges on overstating the work's aching edge, but he doesn't tip over into Bostridge's exaggerations. Everything is wonderfully in place: clear recorded sound, accomplished ensemble work from strings and piano, and above all Padmore's seasoned interpretation - he's inherited the mantle of Peter Pears if anyone has. I'm impressed that the voice remains strong and steady even as the singer turned 53 this year. I'd put his new recording at the top, along with Pears, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Ian Partridge, and Padmore's younger self.

The rest of the generous (72 min.) program is less familiar. RVW's Ten Blake Songs alternate between the twin poles of innocence and experience; the cycle is very thinly accompanied by a solo oboe. Here Padmore encompasses the childlike songs with a lovely sweetness; he's not quite as memorable in the "experience" songs but still very good. The composer wanted to usher us into Blake's ethereal mysticism, a very difficult thing to do. The result isn't a masterpiece, but who has done better? (Britten, once, in The Sick Rose.) The great poem "London," where Blake gave us the unforgettable phrase, mind-forged manacles, is sung without accompaniment and is among the most effective settings.

The oboe's rather mournful cousin, joined by a flute and string quartet, sets the elegiac tone of Peter Warlock's skillfully atmospheric cycle, The Curlew, based on poems by Yeats. Again we are in the countryside, but this isn't so much music of nature as music of solitary reflection. English listeners know the score much better than Americans. Because the instrumental interludes count for so much, it's a decided advantage that they are recorded so beautifully as here. Finally, a 9-min. song, The End, by Jonathan Dove, born 1959. The tone is radiant mysticism, set to a poem by Mark Strand, a long lyric outcry with minimalist swaying in strings and English horn, like slow-motion Philip Glass. It's beautiful and effective, a real surprise.

All in all, this is a memorable recital that any lover of English song will appreciate, even if he owns several versions of On Wenlock Edge already.
