Format:Audio CD
This is a splendid disc! The Serenade to Music is performed in its original version for soloists which is quite different (better?) than the subsequent choral version. The soloists present a marvellous account and the orchestral textures provide a ravishing counterpoint. Of particular note is the violin solo at the beginning which ably sets the scene for this account.
The Mystical Songs (text by George Herbert) are wonderfully sung by Thomas Allen and yet again are accompanied with great sensitivity and skill. The orchestral texture in Love bade me welcome is particularly fine as is Allen's performance which captures the tentative steps of the narrator into relationship with the Divine with an understated passion.
Nabuko Imai's Viola Solo at the beginning of Flos Campi is also worthy of note and sets the essentially 'Pastoral' feel of the piece although the anonymous Oboe solo is also wonderfully executed.
Lastly, the fantasy on Christmas Carols is well worth listening to and forms the very pleasant end to a marvellous disk. No enthusiast of English music should be without it!

Recordings like this does not come around too often. This is a truly fantastic recording and a must have for Christmas.
The first track is Serenade to Music with 16 solo voices. To make this piece truly magical you need the best 16 solos to sing it. Hyperion have truly delivered they have bought in some of the Big names of British Singers of our Time to sing it. e.g. Some of the great singers include Thomas Allen, Gwynne Howell, Arthur Davies, Sarah Walker, Amanda Roocroft and many more of our great singers.
The rest of the recording is sung by the superb Thomas Allen. This is a must have CD for your collection.

Format:Audio CD
The selection of music on this disc, (neither too short or too long!) is magical. The performances themselves are really top notch, every performer seems in tune and the overall ensemble (choir, soloists, instrumentalists) give their all to make a case for this music. The result is utterly compelling, every soloists 'singing their heart out,' to the betterment of the music as a whole.
There is music here to suit every occasion, every mood, every time of day, every time of year. I am not surprised that Hyperion Records chose this as one of their top discs and it is one of the few CDs that I own that I really feel compelled to say should be on every shelf in the land!
