If the compositions of the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams are unfamiliar to you there is probably no better place to start than with this double CD from Chandos. Although I have many Vaughan Williams CDs and LPs in my collection, there were a few rarer items on these discs that I had no heard before; but having said that there are many established favourites too. The strength of the collection lies in the variety of the 13 pieces on offer. The set opens with the Overture to that rather strange work The Poisoned Kiss which bears some resemblance to the unique Oxford Elegy in that it has a speaker but this time accompanied by soloists, chorus and orchestra. There are Two Hymn-tune Preludes (but not the familiar Rhosymedre), the folk-dance The Running Set, the six-movement choral work Flos Campi, inspired by the Song of Solomon from the O.T., the rarely heard Suite for Viola and Orchestra and a short extract of Sea Songs.

The second CD opens with the Overture to Aristophanes' play The Wasps commissioned for a performance in Cambridge. There are three songs from the pre-Raphaelite song-cycle The House of Life of 1904, sung by Stephen Varcoe (baritone); the Six Studied in English Folk-Song, played in the less common arrangement for clarinet (Janet Hilton) and piano (Keith Swallow); the short Romance for harmonica (Tommy Reilly) and orchestra; an RVW favourite song, Linden Lea, sung by the Huddersfield Choral Society; and two very familiar works to end - the Fantasia on Greensleeves, and the Serenade to Music in its purely orchestra arrangement. This is an absolutely delightful selection of works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, beautifully sung, played and recorded.

HASH(0x929e8024) out of 5 stars Perfect and otherworldly 6 Oct. 2003
By A. Gelder - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

HASH(0x929891d4) out of 5 stars A fine collection, well recorded, & a bargain, to boot! 7 Oct. 2005

This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.

HASH(0x92989b40) out of 5 stars A selection of music by Vaughan Williams 13 Feb. 2013

HASH(0x9298569c) out of 5 stars Only by the grace of God and record companies still devoted to supporting culture and the arts! 7 Nov. 2014
By Timothy R. O'Hanlon - Published on Amazon.com
This is undoubtedly one of the finest collections of Vaughan Williams' music on record!

What makes it so special are not just the "usual suspects" -- the excellent performances, sound quality, etc. but the inclusion of many wonderful works and arrangements that are either not available or rarely found anywhere else (at least in the US!)!

These include: The exquisite "Suite for Viola (Groups 1,2,3)" , the seldom recorded alternate arrangement (featuring clarinet and not viola) of the the "6 Studies In English Folksongs" and a lovely instrumental arrangement of "The Serenade To Music".

Perhaps the reason why these pieces are seldom recorded is because of the high price the Vaughan Williams Trust was charging for the performance and recording rights. I tried to obtain these rights to record the "6 studies" back in the 1980's , featuring a great concert violist by the name of Maxine Karen Johnson; the Trust wanted to charge something like $10,000.00 for the rights! I mention this because we live in an increasingly darker age when those who control the copyrights to Classical treasures like these consider music a just another commodity and only produce and distribute "what sells"!

Unfortunately, the "shelf-life" for Classical recordings tends to be short, I suggest that you pick up these rarities while you still can. I know for a fact that Classical recording companies like Chandos are struggling to stay afloat in a market that the big companies continue to shamelessly pollute with their commercial "musical waste"!

This wonderful recording, along with the many other priceless cultural treasures distributed mainly by Naxos, are still available because members the "old guard", like Klaus Heymann (CEO of Naxos), are devoted to sharing good music and making a lasting contribution to culture and humanity.

Do yourself and the companies who keep recordings like these alive a favor and purchase and download these pieces before they disappear, possible forever!

BTW, another very special recording, which also contains some rare and wonderful Vaughan Williams music, (also the one that inspired me to try to produce the recording I mentioned), was recently released, after being out of print for more than 20 years, and can be found and purchased here:
English Folk Songs (Digitally Remastered)

Among other things, this collections the exquisitely performed folk songs that inspired Vaughan Williams' "Norfolk Rhapsody No.1" ("The Captain's Apprentice" and also "Dives and Lazarus" that the composer based his "5 Variants of Dives and Lazarus" on. Listen to complete album before buying here:
