5.0 out of 5 stars Job - a pointer to the future, 4 Feb 2009
By F. J. Dukes "Broadmayne" (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
VW's Job is often seen as a pointer to his later works and what a marvellous work it is. Some have even suggested it is symphonic in form but there is no mistaking the power and inventiveness of this music. In Vernon Handley, VW's music found a great proponent and his lifelong devotion to his music is beautifully expressed in all the works on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding recording of Job, 25 Jul 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
This interesting selection brings together some of Vaughan Williams' most popular and lesser-known works. The `Classic for Pleasure' series is something of a budget label, but it is worth noting that the tracks here have all been digitally recorded, apart from the Fantasia which has been transferred from analogue.

Although acceptable, I would not pretend that the Fantasia is the best recording I have ever heard, and the Five Variants can seem a little lacklustre at times. With Job, however, the situation is entirely different. This is an absolutely superb recording and interpretation, one which can stand among the best! Job is not performed as often as it should be, yet it incorporates all the familiar traits of Vaughan Williams. His music is often regarded as quintessentially English, and this is evident in Job, despite the subject matter. The stately Saraband, the wonderfully sonorous violin solo of Elihu's dance of Youth and Beauty, and the delicacy of the Pavane all testify to the finest of English music.

But in addition to the fine composition, we have an outstanding interpretation by Venon Handley, faultless playing by the LPO, and an excellent sound recording. All the weight and power is present when necessary, the brass and organ thundering through to represent Satan, balanced by some delicate moments of sheer beauty. The sound is bright and clear, which all adds up to a very fine version of Job.

You shouldn't have to spend a fortune on this album, and if you want a recording of Job, you won't go far wrong with this.
