After a lifetime of loving the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and collecting records of every piece of his that I have been able, it was sheer joy to encounter this for the first time, a major work of his last, astoundingly fertile period, and one which does full justice to his abiding love of English folk-song.
It might seem old-hat to use the four seasons as a framework for a choral work, but in this context it is the wholly right and natural approach. Each one of the chosen songs is a winner, and their sequence offers constant variety and contrast. Yet the work in no way comes over as being "bitty". The voice-setting is wholly natural and the use of women's voices only is in no way a limitation. Every song is given an accompaniment which enhances, rather than obscures its beauty; and it takes several hearings to appreciate fully the immense skill, the product of a lifetime's experience, that RVW put into the orchestrations.
The fill-up, a women's-voice version of the cantata "In Windsor Forest", is beautifully sung but is no substitute for the full choral version. Neither, of course, is a substitute for the opera "Sir John in Love", from which the cantata was extracted.
Nevertheless, I recommend this wholly delightful release without any reservation. Buy and enjoy!
