Vassilis Tsabropoulos - Akroasis,
By Mr J Ashwell (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vassilis Tsabropoulos: Akroasis (Audio CD)
Whilst having Jazz Fm on in the background, I heard Axion Esti (1st track), and the music made me stop in my tracks! The sounds are inspired by ancient Bysantine Greek music, and is timeless in its serenity. I have played the CD as background music at dinner parties, and without fail most of the guests ask what it is - basically it is music that speaks...If you are a lover of piano music, or enjoy tranquil sounds that fill a space and create a laid back mood, or if you are passionate about Keith Jarrett's slow movements, then this CD will be right up your street! Go on, buy it - this is one CD for which you will not regret having got that plastic out...

A gem,
By The man with two legs (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vassilis Tsabropoulos: Akroasis (Audio CD)
Let me begin by saying what this album is not, before getting to what it is. It isn't jazz, in my opinion, although I purchased it from the jazz section and it is often classified as such. I could imagine the term encompassing a wide range of styles - rightly so - but it would be stretching it that much too far to call Akroasis a jazz album. Another thing it is not, in my view, is music for dinner parties. It is no surprise that it would hold its ground quite admirably in these situations, but it is neither meant for this function nor is it ideally suited to it. It is too esoteric an album to be experienced amidst the sounds of crystal, porcelaine and conversation. This music deserves your unconditional attention: simply stop doing anything else and listen to it. Coming to the things Akroasis is, unique would be certainly no overstatement. With the exception of the Gurdjieff/Tsabropoulos release (again from ECM), I have so far found nothing like it. I cannot imagine what would possess a man of Tsabropoulos' busy schedule and many projects to record such an album, but does he ever pull it off... The interpretation of the byzantine hymns is spot on and the playing simply exceptional (not that there is any particular challenge as far as virtuoso playing goes - still, the control and feeling is trully astonishing). These are mainly moody pieces, it has to be said, many tracing their origins to psalms of the greek orthodox easter service, and the emotional charge is not lost in this performance. Not that I necessarily think that one needs to understand this aspect of the music's background to appreciate it (it could possibly be refreshing to listen to this album without the prejudice of the hymns' history). I can think of only a handful of other solo piano albums of such quality and substance.

Akroasis,
This review is from: Vassilis Tsabropoulos: Akroasis (Audio CD)
Vassilis Tsabropoulos is a Greek solist. He attempts a different reading of some of the most beautiful hymns of the Orthodox tradition. He does not pretend to offer an academic reading of the pieces, but a deep, tactile musical impression. An album worth listening to.
