I bought this lantern for a camping holiday. Just tried it out and it works brilliantly. I'm not sure why another reviewer said that it was flimsy but I found it to be well made and sturdy with rubberised top and bottom. No instructions came with it but it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to put the batteries in and how to operate it. The light has a normal bright mode which you activate by pressing the one and only button. If you press the same button again within a few seconds it goes into an energy saving type mode but the light is still very good. Press it again and it turns the light off. The lantern has a blinking green light so you can find it in the dark which is useful. As well as having a carry handle the lantern also has a fold out hook. You can hang it upside down using the hook and remove the light shade for this purpose. We bought this after reading reviews of the Rayovac 300 Lumen lantern which gets rave reviews but I could only find it available in the US. However, after doing some research it turns out that this is the exact same lantern just branded differently as Varta and Rayovac are basically in partnership with each other. We are going to be using this lantern when we go camping in May and have also bought an Energizer camping lantern. I would say that the Varta is considerably brighter than the Energizer lantern albeit at a higher cost.

This lantern arrived recently and to my surprise it was smaller than I expected, especially compared to my old lantern. Don't let the size fool you though, this lantern packs quite a punch. I popped in some rechargable D cells and was amazed at how bright it was. It certainly blew my old 30 led lantern out the water. All the black bits are rubberised and there are O rings for the parts that unscrew to keep out water.
This lantern uses the type of LEDs found in mobile phone camera flashes rather than the older round LEDs so they're a lot brighter.
I've just bought this lantern to replace my old rechargable lantern. When the lead acid battery finally packed in I had to discard the whole lantern as I couldn't find a replacement part. It seems very wasteful so this time I opted for a lantern with separate rechargable batteries. There are cheaper lanterns out there but I thnk the extra brightness and quality of construction was worth paying for.

Had this lantern for coming up to a month now and its still as good as when I got it, with the same batteries as I first put in!
I bought two packs of the Varta Power Accu D 2 Pack - 3000 mAh Ready2Use Rechargeable Batteries to go with it as I wanted a rechargable lantern but none of them had the longevity I needed so this was the next best thing, If not the best thing as when the batteries finally die I can just buy more of them instead of a whole new lantern.
Living off grid (wind turbine) you do need emergency lighting and so far this has been brilliant, good enough to cook with and read with.
There is not much difference between the two light levels but if the ratings are correct (72/150 hours) then thats fine!
Press the button once for high, twice for low and once more to turn off, pressing and holding the button puts it in "strobe" - not disco style, just emergency.

Good lantern
