Product Description

CD Description

'Varshons' is the ninth studio album from American indie rock legends The Lemonheads. Produced by The Butthole Surfers'Gibby Haynes, who also inspired the album with his eclecticmix tapes that he used to pass onto Dando, the album sees The Lemonheads tackling an odd array of covers from a wide range of artists. From G.G. Allin to Townes Van Zandt, Dando gives each song a new lease of life in his own unique indie-pop style. Guest vocals come from the likes of Liv Tyler and Kate Moss.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hopefully just a stop gap?, 22 Jun 2009
By M. K. Sutton "www.come2whereimfrom.co.uk" (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Lemonheads have always swung from one end of the spectrum to the other, at the one end seminal albums like `It's a Shame about Ray' and at the other lacklustre albums like `Car Button Cloth' and this new collection of covers is no exception. Half the album is great the other is not so good. Gram Parsons opener `I just can't Take It Anymore' sets the tone and its good to hear Evan's voice again, follow that with a radical version of Wire's `Fragile' and so far we are looking good and it stays like that for a while. But the middle of the album really sags with a pointless duet with Kate Moss and some weird electronica but thankfully it is brought back into line with the Leonard Cohen song `Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye' and `Beautiful' the Linda Perry song made famous by Christina Aguilera, which means now you can admit that it was a great song all along. So half an effort really, slightly disappointing, but when it does work its great. Now let's hope that slacker Dando pulls his finger out and makes the next Lemonheads album proper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long-overdue covers album from Dando and Co - just skip over track 7., 30 Jul 2009
Evan Dando has always been a great interpreter of other people's songs - Luka, Brass Buttons, Mrs Robinson etc, so it was only a matter of time before he released a full album of them.

It's an interesting set of songs from artists ranging from the obvious, Parsons and Cohen, through to the willfully obscure, GG Alin's Layin' Up With Linda - which he turns in to a fabulous Cave-esque murder ballad.

Dirty Robot - a horrible, embarrassing slab of electro-pop - spoils the overalll feel of the album and loses a star!

Redemption arrives with the two closing tracks, Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye, with Liv Tyler and his fabulous interpretation of Linda Perry's Beatiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A grower, 20 Jul 2009
By P. Murphy - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Good album of well-chosen covers ... didn't really think much of it at first but it is a grower and has a fine selection of songs. Has been on my turntable a lot. All good apart from a turgid cover of 'Beautiful'. Favourite tracks 'I Just Can't Take It Anymore' and 'Layin Up With Linda'. It is no 'Its a Shame About Ray' though.
