This DVD is a must for all Lesley fans, and perhaps for others too. It is most certainly not your typical Christmas Musical Extravaganza, of which one often feels weary.
Lesley has chosen a wide range of musical styles, and there are excellent new arrangements of well known favourites. The end product is a live performance which is stunning in all respects. Guests, stage sets, and variety of songs, are a joy to the ears. I was particularly impressed by several items in the concert where Lesley "spread her wings" even more. The singing and musical arrangement of 'On holy ground', was deeply moving and sung with great passion, so much so,I found it 'spine tingling'.Lesley and Guy's performances of 'Sound the trumpet',and'Baby its cold outside',equally superb in a very different musical genre. From start to finish, this concert recording, keeps you spellbound. It is full of surprises, and never fails to move and entertain.
When you reach the end, you just want to hear and watch it, all over again.
Finally, not only is this DVD wonderful to listen to, it is also
visually excellent. The colourful sets, lighting and costumes, Lesley's is as sparkling as she herself, all add to the 'magic'.I know I will assign this album to my all time favourites.Lesley just gets better and better, without a doubt, I consider it an all round seasonal winner.

This is an excellent example of what it is, a BBC Christmas special featuring a star performer with guests and (largely) their own choice of music for the festive season. In general this works very well. It is musically excellent and visually well-produced. The guests too are first rate performers. Lesley Garrett is, of course, herself. It is entirely a matter of personal choice, some people love her and some people can't abide her. In my view she is excellent at this type of performance and has a genuine operatic pedigree that means she is more than just one of the many hyped-up quasi 'opera singers' that we have today, who have never sung a whole opera in their lives. Lesley has sung many operas and so the depth and quality of her musicality shows through in the skill and control of her performances.

The choice of music here is generally very good and the arrangements are all excellent. There are several genuinely new experiences here in the way old favourites are performed. I particularly liked the arrangement and performance of 'Little Drummer Boy'. However, some of the items are not appropriate. The justification given for including 'Abide With Me' is tenuous in the extreme. Although the actual arrangement and performance is very good this is by no stretch of the imagination a Christmas piece. Similarly the inclusion of the song to the Argentinian flag by Jose Cura was clearly for the purposes of promoting his (then) latest album and has no connection (as far as I can tell) with Christmas. I can't tell because it is sung in Spanish and there are no subtitles or words given in the booklet. This is a major defect with this DVD. The performance includes several items that are not in English (largely in Spanish or Zulu) but are not well enough known for people to know what they are about. Ideally subtitles should have been included but there should at least have been words in the booklet. Even without subtitles, though, the presence of Jose Cura is extremely welcome. Although he is principally known as a genuine operatic tenor his best performances here are the two very gentle numbers he performs. These are the lovely 'El Naciemiento' performed in Spanish with choir, and the duet of Silent Night which he sings in Spanish as a counterpoint to Lesley singing in English, which works extremely well. These two items are really special.

This DVD lasts just one hour, so is not great value at full list price. It is however a good quality production, as one would expect from the BBC. It is an all regions DVD with either PAL or NTSC playback options and Dolby digital sound. The main defect is the lack of subtitles.

..then you'll love this. My only two (minor) complaints are a) that it's too short and b) that a few more Christmas carols or yule songs would have been welcome. However "Jerusalem" alone is wonderful in quality, so makes up for quantity. Loved it.
