Into the ornately decorated oblong concert hall, said to have the best acoustics in the world, 2000 well-dressed patrons crowded on New Year's Day 2007 to enjoy the annual New Year Vienna Philharmonic Concert - the conductor Zubin Mehta. As usual the event was telecast throughout the world. Also on hand were a team of DGG camera and recording personnel, and the result is this splendid DVD.
On the program are 5 items apiece by brothers Johann and Josef Strauss, 4 by their father, 1 by their brother Eduard, and 2 by Josef Hellmesberger. Of the Johann items I especially welcome the waltz "Wo die Zitronen bluhn", apparently a favorite also of Zubin Mehta. "I love this piece," he said, "and I've never done it before with the `Wiener'." 2 of the Josef Strauss waltzes included, with their dramatic introductions, have long been favorites with conductors, as has Johann's best overture - "Waldmeister" Overture.
Mehta's way with waltzes is to hold back the pulse ("rattenuto" in Italian) each time the opening refrain occurs. With all items, also, he tends to cut off the final chord a split second early.
At least one item provides some enjoyable badinage between conductor and players. Mehta conducts throughout without scores. The DVD provides, as an extra, members of the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper Ballet in ballet versions of two of the waltzes. Another extra features various Austrian brass ensembles performing in beautiful Austrian park and mountain settings. One ensemble performs on a raft floating down the Danube.

This is one of the long series of New Year's Day concerts from Vienna. It follows the usual and well-tried format, and delivers the usual reliable level of enjoyment. Mehta, an honorary member of the VPO, makes his 4th appearance in the role of conductor. He has forged close ties with the orchestra since his debut in 1961 having conducted them in over 170 concerts.
Mehta directs without score and the players respond with enthusiasm and their customary skill. The most interactive moment, greatly enjoyed by the audience, is Johann Strauss 1's Fantasie on the Carnival of Venice during which the orchestra take full advantage to play to the crowd regardless of the conductor who fakes dismay from time to time. From this point on the enthusiasm of the audience goes up a notch.
The New Year `speech' is very slightly extended as Mehta takes advantage of the moment to welcome Bulgaria and Romania into the European Union. This small gesture further enhances the feeling of personal warmth to the occasion.
The bonus features include the usual ballet contributions which are thus able to be enjoyed as separate items to the straight concert. There is also a film based on the Austrian National Park which is a pleasant 23 minute diversion.
The recording by the highly experienced Brian Large is excellent as stereo or surround sound and provides sympathetic camera work in his usual manner. This production is described as High Definition but is not available in Blu-ray as yet.
This can be recommended as yet another successful New Year's Day concert in what is now a long-running series of successes.

Very pleased with the quicknes of the dispatch and delivery. The subject matter is terrific and well worth relaxing and listening to it and the other DC's/DVD's that we have purchased from the same company.
