Amazon.co.uk Review

With Punk now the stuff of postcards, it's good to have Punk in London, a 1977 feature that taps the source of what the scene was all about. German director Wolfgang Büra interviews a number of players and promoters but, apart from concert sequences by The Adverts and The Clash--in gritty form on their ill-fated first European tour--the emphasis is on "almost were" bands. Büra's reticent and awkward questioning won't win awards for journalism, but interviewees are prepared to open up to him. There's political hard-talking from members of Chelsea, a chat with the unassuming bassist of The Lurkers (and parents!), priceless interview footage with Kevin Rowland, then in Birmingham band The Kiljoys; best of all, the laconic roadie of Subway Sect, a true leveller well aware that the whole "Punk thing" will fall victim to commercial pressure like counter-cultures before it.

On the DVD: The 1977 film reproduces decently, its faded realism appropriate to the subject, and the sound captures the sweaty environs of London's club scene with raw immediacy. A pity, though, that sound and vision in the interviews weren't better synchronised. There are 21 access points; The Clash sequence is repeated with German subtitles (though markedly inferior picture quality), and an extended adverts sequence with German-only offstage banter. Overall, a quirky package, and a quirky documentary--but with a sincerity and authenticity that no "Best of" could ever hope to capture.--Richard Whitehouse

Intresting documentary style anology of Punk in the early days of Punk before commercialisation and selling out. This is filmed by a German who went to London to see what this concept of music and rebellion(punk)was all about. It sets the scence about how and why Punk took the nation by storm. There is some excellent footage of bands that many people will not have seen before and some intresting interviews.I would have preferred more music but this apart this film gives a real insight into life and Punk in London in1977/8.

Wolfgang's prescience in being in the right place at the right time is somewhat marred by the quality, which is sometimes appalling. Nevertheless an enjoyable documentary for those who love the music of the era.

For a true flavour of England post-punk I would recommend 'Rough Cut and Ready Dubbed' which is better at nailing the all pervading sense of impending violence and also contains a healthy dose of British humour.

Just watched this beauty. Does a brilliant job of evoking the London punk scene in late 77. Some of the idealism lives on. Bands springing up all over the place. Still lots of diversity and enthusiasm but also quite a bit of cynicism (Roadent), pretensious nonsense (Magenta Divine - I think), enigmatic comments (Vic Goddard), downright aggression (Jean Jacques Burnell) and loads of great footage. Brilliant and essential. Evokes the era wonderfully. For anyone who missed it read the Andy Blade book and then watch this - or the other way round if you like. That was the thing we called the punk rock. In a nutshell. Grim, grubby, wonderful and forever fascinating. We'll not see its like again, and I suppose that's why we still pick over the bones. Again and again. Recommended.
