4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written stories 20 July 2014

These short stories are both well-written and entertaining, creating a universe of unfamiliar and often quite dark localities, governed by strange rules, in which unexpected things often happen. The common theme is mankind in various forms, from the variants to deviants, from men and women with sophisticated prosthetic limbs, to mindless clones, zombies and other nightmare forms.

Apart from the opening story, set in a dystopian Europe, the first half of the collection tend to set the scene in vivid descriptive detail but too often feel rather incomplete -a kind of 'work in progress' rather than the finished product. Those in the second half, generally longer, are better: 'Tin Soldier', a deeply moving story of two soldiers, one hideously mutilated by war, but united by their disfigurement - is one of the best SF shorts I have read recently; 'Another Kind' in which a richly endowed, but environmentally cursed planet similarly warps the values of those who exploit it; 'Descent', in a post-apocalyptic world that has turned everyone into killers, even those fortunate enough not to be transformed into the 'Kynd'; and the final story with its arcane rituals stemming from our own pagan folklore, set in a Frankensteinian universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and imaginative short stories 16 Jun 2014

I enjoyed every one of these short stories, many of which seemed like snapshots taken from full-length novels.

Some of them put me in mind of the surreality of the early Christopher Priest stuff, while others made me think of Michael Moorcock and J.G. Ballard. That's not to imply that they lack originality; on the contrary, Robinson's ability to construct fantastic worlds is impressive, not least because he manages to convey vividly all the imagery in a short story, and without the need for exposition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Thought Provoking, and Chilling 17 May 2014
Variant Reflections is a collection of twelve sci-fi/fantasy short stories that explores humanity, and, in my opinion, what it means to be human. The stories are enjoyable, thought provoking (and one in particular) rather chilling and will likely keep me awake for a few days to come. A couple of the stories didn't really do it for me and felt like they could use another go over or a bit more time on a better ending, but that could just be my own interpretation of them. That being said, seven of the stories really stand out for me and I feel should be explored more deeply in future; either in other stories set in the same universe, or in novel form. Those being “Midwinter Crossing” with it's mysterious clone/genetically grown eastern european girl found half starved on an abandoned boat; the War Of The Worlds-esque “Unremembered” with it's dead tripods and metamorphosing disease; the chilling “Deviant” which, I'm sure, will keep me awake at night for a while; “Mirrors and Shadows” with it's ancient mystical themes; “Another Kind”, which reminded me a little of Frankenstein's Monster mixed with slavery; “Descent”, which reminded me a little of “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy; and finally “Of The Blood” which reminded me a bit of Game Of Thrones whilst on acid. Overall this is definitely a collection worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely anthology spanning several genres 11 Jun 2014
By Christine Clukey Reece - Published on Amazon.com
Thoroughly enjoy reading works by this author. He allows readers to experience the emotions (sometimes equivocal ones) that drive his characters, adding depth to a vividly imagined range of worlds. I’d love to read a collection of stories set in the world of the Mods and Rockers, there’s tons of potential for mayhem there. "Unremembered" was haunting - that story will stay with me for a long time.
4.0 out of 5 stars Some really good stories 26 May 2014
By Electric Palette - Published on Amazon.com
Robert Robinson's Varient Reflections is an eclectic set of short stories they vary in genre from sci-fi to military and in essence, there is something for everyone. Many of the stories have the potential to be expanded and perhaps made into a novella or full length novel. I particularly liked the first 3 stories, for me they had the most potential. But of course this is personal preference. I would be happy to read more of Roberts work, and would love to see his stories develop. 4*
