Sweden released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Norwegian ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Danish ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), Finnish ( Subtitles ), Norwegian ( Subtitles ), Swedish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: 3-DVD Set, Box Set, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Bitter Flowers (Bitre blomster)
A man vanishes without a trace. His lover, a married, successful politician, discreetly contacts Private Investigator Varg Veum for assistance. Varg finds her lover murdered, and the politician's husband is arrested for the murder. However, Varg accuses the police of judicial murder, and gets involved in an international murder case branching out far beyond the Norwegian borders, with characters who would not shy away from any methods.
Yours Until Death (Din til døden)
In Din til døden, Veum finds himself in the midsts of a divorce with ramifications outside of the ordinary, ranging from car theft, murder, jealousy and robbery. The film is brilliantly set off, with some very skillful plot twists early on (including a fine scene inside a garage and an excellent segment with Seim, Mestad, Bergmann and Lullau). There is a lot more style and flair in the conduction of Din til døden than in the two prior films, and Richter Strand shows a delicate blend of tones throughout the film's different parts. Pleasing is also the increasingly tightknit and wonderfully acted relationship between Veum and Hamre. Seim and Floberg are absolutely magnetic together, and the subdued ending does wonders to an otherwise somewhat predictable final clear-up. ...Varg Veum Box 1 - 3-DVD Set ( Bitter Flowers / Sleeping Beauty / Yours Until Death ) ( Bitre blomster / Tornerose / Din til døden )

Format: DVD
The main protagonist of this series is former child protection worker Varg Veum (a pun on the Norwegian expression varg i veum which means persona non grata or outlaw - varg means wolf or culprit) who tries to get by as best as he can by working as a private investigator in Bergen.

He has a love/hate relationship with the police and has a knack for picking clients that generate more trouble than income (he refuses to take on divorce cases) and he also tends to become more involved with said clients than is probably professionally recommended or even accepted.

The series is well cast and -acted and the rainy and moody, but beautiful Bergen landscape is perfect to set the stage for the gritty and often very violent crimes that are the basis for the individual stories. The stories themselves I suppose are not new or original to the Nordic crime wave, but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is a very good way to spend a few cold winter hours on the sofa.

There are 6 episodes in the series so far:

Bitter Flowers
Sleeping Beauty
Yours Until Death
Fallen angels
Woman in the fridge
Buried dogs

Each feature length episode can be viewed on its own, but I recommend you start from the beginning to set the stage for Varg's development.

Update 4 June 2012:
There are now 3 more episodes in the series:
The Writing on the Wall
Black Sheep
The Consorts of Death

Update 24 June 2013:
There are a further 3 instalments (with English subtitles) in the series now:
I mørket er alle ulver grå|At Night All Wolves Are Grey
De døde har det godt|The Dead Have It Easy
Kalde hjerter|Cold Hearts

In mourning since I have watched all my Wallander and Spiral dvds, but then I found this! Imagine a buff, blonde sexier, Nordic version of Sean Bean solving grisly crimes that would make Kurt Wallander's eyes water - and that's Varg Veum. Bought box sets 1-3 but still hoping for more!

Although a little dark and 'heady' I really like the main character. He is thoughtful, meticulous and humble. Would like to know more about the CPS work he did prior to this series since it comes up now and again. Great series.

Varg Veum is a realistic sometimes confronting detective. Not a standard beginning nor a standard end. More or less an intellectual detective series. Surprisingly well filmed and rather good music under the movie. In short there are not thousands of bullets flying around but a good story well filmed.
