4.0 out of 5 stars good product if used as specified - not great 4 Jan 2011

We hesitated a lot to pay that much amount of money for a vacuum cleaner. We already owned a good Dyson (and a portable Dyson) so we really considered the possible benefits and cons (price mainly).

After 2 years with a toddler, the carpet was stained here and there, and looked old. We payed £85 for a "professional" cleaning and I must say that I was deeply impressed by the beast of a machine the guy used. The unprofessional part was the human element. Sloppy and hurried, never got to clean everything perfectly and I had to make him redo bits all over the house.

So it made me think: what if I could do it myself? So, we bit the bullet and bought the Vaporetto after an extensive search of products, reviews, etc.

First and most important: DO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Do not put more water than marked because it will overflow. Do wait for the boiler to reach desired temperature or the steam will be weak. Do use the suitable accessory for every job. If you do that, you can have the professional results you hope for.

Other tips: do a first run just with the steam; clean the brush often when on the carpet; do not worry about water in the cleaning tank getting dirty; take time, start slowly and do just bits of the house; when on the carpet, press firmly.

What can the Vaporetto do?
- pick up dirt: the suction is very good with the right accesory
- refresh the carpet for a "as new" look (depending on the carpet, see below)
- pick up stains: depending on the source: milk and fruit juice perfectly, coffee and tomato not so much. You can help with a brush and some spray-on carpet cleaner + steam, but the vacuum cleaner itself is not enough for touch stains
- pick up lint: this is what it does best!

1.0 out of 5 stars Liable to breaking 7 Jan 2009
By anon
Its good at doing windows, and giving mattresses and curtains a good hygenic clean, but I am afraid is very bulky and is TOTALLY unreliable. Ours has broken 3 times, and has now finally packed up. You'll get about 2 years use out of this is you're lucky.

1.0 out of 5 stars polti handle fault - are they being honest 3 July 2012
By Shadow
I am trying to find out what is going on with the polti 690 it appears they know that there is a manufacturing fault with the connector on the handle, but rather than be honest and do a product recall they are simply scraping that design and bringing out a new product in September 2012. The connector at the handle has broken on mine and a friends polti 690. This is a lot of money to pay for a product that lasts for no time at all, very bad, not good for the brand reputation.
