Product Description

Re-edited June 2012

What really happens in the heart of Brittany to everyday ex-pats?

We have all read the 'air brushed' versions of the idyllic lifestyle down in southern France and the ramblings of some authors with their cosy life in their rural retreats, and the plethora of escapism TV programs cleverly edited to make more exciting viewing!

But let us scratch beneath the surface as we follow the Taylor's from their mundane lifestyle in the UK to France.

What will be the fallout when "white van man" and his family arrive in a tiny hamlet in a small Brittany village? Will they upset the French locals or will there be more sparks flying from other ex-pats!

A White Van Man is probably better known as a 'Jack of all Trades' in the US, a bit of a 'Jack the Lad'. There is also a series on BBC 3 called White Van Man which is coming to the US. The main character in the book Barry, is very much a 'White Van Man'

How much strain will it put on their relationship, will they cope in a foreign country with so many different laws and idiosyncrasies?

The Taylor's in France will give you a real insight into the real rural, ex-pats lives, so sit back open a nice bottle of French wine and enjoy the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think I've met Barry 24 April 2013

For anyone who has lived in France as an ex-pat, you will not fail to spot the characters in Steve Bichards novel, every commune has it's fair share of Clarissa's and Barry's. Steve has portrayed the roguish hero Barry with his mad cap plans and long suffering wife to great comic effect. I warmed to Barry and his antics, as he circumnavigates his life in a small village in rural Brittany. This is a refreshingly honest account of what happens in many ex-pat societies, how they still drive English registered cars despite being in France for years, work on the black and skirt about the law, running unregistered B&B's These are things you don't hear about too much in the rose tinted glasses, stories that pander to those who dream of an idilic life in France. A fun entertaining read that wouldn't go a miss as a TV series, hurry up with the sequel!

An amusing and fun tale of white van man's invasion into rural France. Some great characters making this a witty and at times emotional enthralling read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read 16 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book and it was very funny at times, but the main character was not very believeable. He seemed to be his own worst enemy. The ending was very rushed, it felt like the author had run out of ideas and the other characters were very stereotipical (although I have met some people like this in France).

1.0 out of 5 stars Schoolboy Essay
I gave this book one star primarily because there isn't an option to give zero stars!

It comes across as a schoolboy essay and not a very good one at that. Read more
