Book Description

1 Sep 2007
Known as The Maid of Mayfair for her unassailable virtue, unwavering resolve, and quiet dignity, suffragette leader, Caledonia-Callie-Rivers is the perfect counter for detractors' portrayal of the women as rabble rousers, lunatics, even whores. But a high-ranking enemy within the government will stop at nothing to ensure that the Parliamentary bill to grant the vote to females dies in the Commons - including ruining the reputation of the Movement's chief spokeswoman. After a streak of disastrous luck at the gaming tables threatens to land him at the bottom of the Thames, photographer Hadrian St. Claire reluctantly agrees to seduce the beautiful suffragist leader and then use his camera to capture her fall from grace. Posing as the photographer commissioned to make her portrait for the upcoming march on Parliament, Hadrian infiltrates Callie's inner circle. But lovely, soft-spoken Callie hardly fits his mental image of a dowdy, man-hating spinster. And as the passion between them flares from spark to full-on flame, Hadrian is the one in danger of being vanquished.

The book introduces us young Harry Stone, a 14 year orphaned son of a prostitute living rough in the streets of Victorian London. One night a well-to-do stranger offers him a way out and a new life. Harry does well for himself and we next come across him as Hadrian St. Claire, a photographer who takes portraits of high society ladies. Unfortunately Hadrian has a gambling habit which has resulted in a huge debt that he is unable to pay and it looks very likely that the local money lender will soon be demanding payment in the form of body parts. Hadrian can see no way out until he is approached by someone who is willing to pay a huge sum of money in return for a graphic photograph that will expose and humiliate the leader of the local suffragette movement. In the words of his client, `I mean to see Calendonia Rivers not only ruined but Vanquished'

Calendonia Rivers (Callie) is the leader of the London suffragette movement. She is a beautiful, well bred, educated, eloquently spoken and highly intelligent spinster who has spent many years putting aside her own desires aside in order to fight for women's rights to the vote. When Hadrian and Callie accidentally bump into one another there is an immediate attraction between them. However Callie knows that she must continue with her mission and hard as it is she tries to deny the growing attraction. Hadrian on the other hand has no such qualms and he inveigles himself into her life until she agrees to sit for a portrait. As they spend more time together their feelings grow and we witness their erotic and amorous liaisons - in fairly graphic detail!

However, as you would expect, things do not go smoothly and they find their lives in danger as Hadrian's former client plans to take his revenge on the pair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold Still Please 6 Nov 2011

Mr Hadrian St. Claire is the very worst kind of rogue you'd ever wish to meet - a sultry smile, a dark past and a taste for ladies. Chance, money and a deal with the devil throw him into the path of Miss Callie Rivers -

I couldn't put it down, loved it. As a romance, I'd put this at 5 stars for the research gone into it, the fluid style and an intriguing plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Vanquished - a disappointment 16 Oct 2011

I purchased this book after reading the blurb and a reader's review as I thought the subject matter sounded interesting. However, I found it really disappointing. Unlike the previous reviewer, I felt that not enough was made of the heroine's work as a suffragette. The explicit sex scenes were just too long and I ended up flicking through them to get back to the story. I didn't find them saucy - just boring! I was very irritated by the Americanisms in the book - use of words such as sidewalk and other expressions really grated as did references to using the "loo" and other phrases which were just too modern for a book which was supposed to be set in Victorian England. In my opinion, the author really failed to capture the essence of the period. If the novel was written as an example of a very lightweight romance with explicit sex scenes and not much historical accuracy, then I suppose it achieved what the author intended but it really wasn't my cup of tea at all.
