Product Description

Product Description

In this novel notions of "vanishing" become entangled with the novel's other concerns - the impulse to fly from intolerable reality, the impulse to absent oneself from the burden of life and what drives people to the dangerous edge of things? --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

The peace of Carl Strassberger's comfortable life as the only son of a wealthy banker pursuing his artistic career in the south of France is shattered suddenly when his brother-in-law, Larry Lucas, the heir to the family business, simply vanishes after landing a multi-million dollar deal.

Summoned to investigate Larry's disappearance, Carl goes undercover and discovers the sinister travel company Larry used for his escape, whose business it is to help wealthy, unhappy clients disappear. But Larry's mental state was so fragile at the same time of his disappearance that Carl fears he is dead…or worse.

'Vanishing Point' tells the chilling tale of an incredibly successful but manic-depressive banker who, having been driven to the dangerous edge of things, decides to vanish. It is a story of flight and pursuit, of financial intrigue, of old and menacing secrets unearthed, and of normal lives thrust suddenly into violent confusion.

"West has a talent, possessed by only the very best"
NATIONAL REVIEW

"Morris West is a remarkably consistent exponent of a dying art – the production of literate and intelligent bestsellers"

A few of his novels dont do it (for me), but this one does! He is (for me) one of the very best novel writers, ever.... When you finish one of his novels though, you'll be bereft for days having lost touch with such an intelligent, wise and respectful companion.

Money, Love, Adventure - Vanishing Point has it all! 12 Sep 1996
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I laughed, I cried, I stayed up all night to finish the
book and then was disappointed it was done. Vanishing Point grabs your interest from the first page.
The main character is just like us: sometimes courageous,
sometimes confused, sometimes too clever for his own good,
sometimes just wanting to escape to a desert island. Follow him through worlds of exotic locations, family
intrigue, underworld crime, high finance, and wise (or
unwise) love as he unravels the mystery of a family
member's disappearance. A great adventure!

UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION 5 Jan 2002
By Nancy Schneider - Published on Amazon.com
The mind and how it works is a complex mystery.Morris West has a gift for translating this emotional story with compassion and understanding. Larry Lucas, the tortured hero captured my attention and still remains a point of reference for the bi polar personality.

Just a bad book 12 April 2004
By Jorge Frid - Published on Amazon.com
The beginning of the book is interesting and a good story, but when appear Larry Lucas and he just wanted to die because the life is to hard for him is really pathetic, he wanted to do everything good for his family and the only thing he did was very wrong.
