Product Description

Praise for the author: "Art Wolfe's photographs are magically composed and stunningly beautiful. Like nature poetry of the first rank, they pull our emotions closer to some of the most charismatic and (sadly) endangered animal species of the world." -- Edward O. Wilson "Art Wolfe is an artist. He works with all of the artistic elements ... line, form, texture, composition, light and shadow, and produces visual masterpieces from the real world. Turning the pages of The Living Wild brings on not only a psychological reaction but a physical reaction ... my jaw drops and my breath is almost taken away by the imagination and beauty he has brought to us." -- Robert Bateman "Art Wolfe's brilliant and sensitive photographs are a powerful stimulation for changing attitudes. Art is passionately involved in the life-and-death struggle of the African continent, its people, its wildlife, and its forests, woodlands, savannahs, and deserts. His love and commitment are revealed in each photograph and these, in turn, will stir the heart of the reader." -- Jane Goodall "[A] master of the most advanced photographic techniques." -- Roger Tory Peterson "Art has the broadest range of excellence of any nature photographer I know." -- Galen Rowell --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

it really is! it's the best way I have seen so far to demonstrate how human brain can be tweaked to see something it is not in reality. Camouflage at its most.

Amazing 30 Oct. 2005
By Nomad - Published on
Format: Hardcover
The photographs in this book are amazing. It is difficult to believe that one person could capture all these images in one life time. The pictures show a wide variety of ( North American ? ) animals in surroundings which match thier natural protective camoflauge. The cover is one of the lesser examples. This book must represent decades of work. I recommend it highly to anyone who likes nature photography.

Nature's Puzzles 11 Nov. 2008
By T. Martin - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Although it's aimed at adults, Vanishing Act is the best children's book I've ever seen. Kids treat it like a puzzle as they pick out the animal from its background. It gives us a chance to explain to them about life on earth when they are totally engaged. The photography is beautiful, too.

Art Wolfe has turned wildlife photography upside down. Instead of isolating animals in their environment, he has shown them as part of the ecosystem in the most striking way.

Amazing and highly recommended.

Great for kids too! 31 Jan. 2009
By Romaine - Published on
Format: Hardcover
As a photographer and a fan of Art Wolfe, I purched this book for the usual reason - great photgraphic inspiration. This title does not dissapoint. It is big and beautiful... :)

BUT HERE IS THE UNEXPECTED BONUS: My kids LOVE this book as well. They have a great time looking for the animals hidden in their natural environments. Of course this is much better than the typical seek-and-find childrens books. Another unexpected benefit is that now when we take hikes, they are always looking out for animals that are blending in.

Awesome coffee table book! 4 April 2006
By Gloria Pike - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I purchased this book as a gift for my husband, and we've greatly enjoyed sitting and studying all the HUGE, gorgeous pictures in this book. My younger siblings had fun finding all the animals, too, although for the price I'm not sure I'd reccommend it as a book for young children, since it IS a rather large and artistic book.

If you love great nature photography and cleverly composed images, this book is worth checking out.

Beautiful Book 21 Jan. 2007
By E. Frank - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I saw this book at a store and had to sit down in the store and look at it page by page and since it was a $50.00 book, had to race home and buy it on Amazon. It is a BEAUTIFUL book. If you love animals and nature in general, this book is awe inspiring. I bought it for my family. It shows the miraculous strategy of camaflage in nature. It is fun to see if you can find the animals in their natural settings. There are descriptive text and fingernail pictures in the back of the book to tell you where the animal is in the picture if you weren't able to spot it and a paragraph or two about the animal in general. It is a great coffee table book for guests to look through while they are waiting.
