Product Description

On the evening of May 3, 2007, Gerry and Kate McCann returned to their resort apartment in Portugal's Algarve to every parents' worst nightmare--their daughter, three-year-old Madeleine Beth McCann had vanished from her room. Her disappearance sparked a worldwide manhunt. Poster campaigns, distraught pleas from the parents, and frenzied media coverage all ensued--but still Madeleine's whereabouts remain a mystery. Portuguese police initially commenced a search for Madeleine's abductor, but as the case dragged on the waters became muddied and controversy dogged the investigation--British police were called in, suspects entered and departed the frame, sightings of Madeleine were reported from around the world, accusations about the thoroughness and competency of the Portuguese police were made, and the McCanns were scrutinized in the full glare of the media spotlight--with the Portuguese police even declaring Gerry and Kate suspects.

The true crime genre of writing must, by its very nature, take as its research material the heartbreak and misery that always relates to a crime, whether the source is the unfortunate victim or the relatives of those who have been snatched from life. Read the first page

This was an interesting but not very informative read. The chapter on the casa pio children was absolutely horrific and something I knew nothing about prior to reading this book. One thing I would like to ask Mr Collins is that if he is so certain that Madeleine wandered out of the apartment and was picked up by this man, who was seen by three people, why did the child appear to be asleep? Surely any child picked up by a stranger would be distressed or at least awake and looking bewildered unless she was drugged. If, as Mr Collins states, this was an opportunistic abduction and not at all premeditated it seems highly unlikely that the abductor would be carrying sedatives on the off chance that he might find a small child wandering alone at night?! Or am I missing something?
Anyway we can only hope and pray that this unfortunate and innocent child will be found soon and the investigative journalists can put their feet up and put their lap tops to rest.

Very poorly written 15 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as a gift for my wife. There were two Madeline books to choose from and sadly I chose the cheaper option. The book is very poorly written which makes it very difficult to read. I would recommend you buy the other book. Thanks.

This book was absolutely appalling and to say the author is an investigative journalist is pushing it. He clearly compiled the majority of this information after scanning the pages of the Daily Mail. So for anyone who wants to read a fresh take on the case, forget it. Many of the paragraphs repeat themselves and when he's not preaching about the McCann's fateful decision to leave Madeleine unattended, he's waffling about the history of Portugal. It took me a month to struggle through this book and quite frankly, I want those four weeks back! It was an absolute waste of time and a pile of guff.
