Amazon.co.uk Review
When a gifted illusionist turns his hand to violent death, The Vanished Man is only one of a series of classic conjuring tricks that paralysed forensic investigator Lincoln Rhyme finds himself having to understand. More important even than the details of technique which Lincoln and his partner Amelia are taught by young illusionist Kara are the conjuror's habits of mind--misdirection piled on deceit piled on false leads. It is not just sleight of hand that deceives the eye; it is where the eye is tricked into looking. Is the killer who calls himself Malerik just after a sequence of showy violent deaths, or is that what he wants Lincoln to think?

This is an impressive addition to Deaver's much-praised sequence of novels about Lincoln and Amelia simply because they find themselves up against an equally intelligent killer with radically different ways of thinking. Their habits of logic and science and legwork are of limited use against someone who constantly stretches the limits of the improbable. Jeffrey Deaver has always been an ingenious thriller writer and this book returns to the sardonic wit of his earliest work as he too engages in endless trickery and confusion of our expectations. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
'a brilliant thriller ... THE VANISHED MAN is page-turning stuff. A bestselling certainty'. THE BOOKSELLER 'Giddily entertaining ... This is prime Deaver' Publishers Weekly 'When it comes to sleight of hand, Jeffery Deaver could probably give most magicians a few tips on how it's done. The American is wresting the psychological thriller out of the hands of its acknowledged (female) English masters and giving it fresh impetus and excitement. It's well nigh impossible for a reader to predict the twists and turns. The question is not "when will I guess what's going to happen?" but "how will he manage to fool me again and again?" It's the usual roller-coaster ride of thrills, bloodspills and fear for the reader. THE VANISHED MAN more than earns its place on the shelf of "books that keep the reader on the edge of his chair." Not since Harry Potter last picked up his Firebolt broomstick has magic played such an integral part in a plot - or been so superbly handled. "You can't fool all of the people all of the time" is the old edict - unless, of course, you're master storyteller Jeffrey Deaver.' - Janice Young, Yorkshire Post 1.5.03 'crackling and compulsive' PUBLISHING NEWS 20030110 'Deaver on customarily sharp form ... Crackling and compulsive' - Barry Forshaw, Crime Time 20030110 '... the action is breakneck, the explanation of the tricks of the magician's trade genuinely fascinating and the relationship between Rhyme and Sachs is, as ever, movingly depicted.' - Irish Independent 20030110 'this is an astonishing novel, full of twists, turns and miraculous escapes.' - Waterstone's Quarterly 20030110 'Gripping stuff' - Big Issue, Australia 20030110 'The twists follow one another at a dizzying rate and when it seems that everything has at last been solved, Deaver has still another surprise up his sleeve ... enjoy' - Sunday Telegraph 20030110 'Teeth-chattering suspense' - Daily Mail -- Daily Mail 'The best psychological thriller writer around' - The Times 'Stunning' -- Scotsman 'the most creative, skilled and intriguing thriller writer in the world ... [Deaver] has produced a stunning series of bestsellers with unique characterisation, intelligent characters, beguiling plots and double-barrelled and sometimes triple-barrelled solutions.' - Ray Chesterton, Daily Telegraph --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant, 24 Oct 2007
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
'The Vanished Man', written by Jeffery Deaver, is the fifth main book in the Lincoln Rhyme series, starring the quadripilegic and moody but amazing forensic scientist and his lover and police officer Amelia Sachs. The story begins when a girl is murdered in a music school, the killer is then trapped in a room with no exits but when the police open it up he is gone. This starts a series of murders based on famous magic tricks from the likes Harry Houdini. The killer is then dubbed as The Conjurer, using illusions and misdirection to fool even the most clever and experienced dectectives, including Rhyme.

Brilliant is probably the best word to describe this thriller. I'd been a little put off from the Lincoln Rhyme series after reading The Empty Chair, which was far from great and generally quite dull, but The Vanished Man is just so good that I think it could even be better than the excellent Bone Collector and The Coffin Dancer, which I loved. There's a lot of insight into the world of magic (which I find extremely interesting) and it goes to show that Deaver really did his research when writing this one.

Overall this is a very enjoyable read indeed that was nearly impossible to put down due to the highly suspense-filled plot and the twists keep coming the whole way through, right until the last few pages. Thanks to this book my faith in this series has now been completely restored and I have now purchased the next two books in the series (The Twelfth Card and The Cold Moon) and I'm really looking forward to reading them too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This guy doesn't know how to write a bad book, 28 Jun 2005
By OEJ (England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Vanished Man (Hardcover)
We already knew that Lincoln Rhyme, despite his physical disabilities, has an IQ of at least 300 and, well, he always gets his man - but in this case he really does seem to have found his match. The initial opening sequence - when our 'vanished man' does just that under seemingly impossible circumstances - sets the standard for the rest of the tale, one in which visual deception is the key trick in much the same way that a magician manipulates his audience into thinking that (for example) he has been sawn in half. We know it can't be possible, yet our eyes defy us to prove otherwise.

As with every other Deaver novel I have read (about 6 so far), the writing is consistently intelligent, there's barely a flaw in the descriptive text or the spoken word, the author always flatters his readers with just enough clues so as to leave us to work things out for ourselves and never makes the mistake (as many writers do) of adding condescending pulp to the main lines. He makes us think, he makes us work with Rhyme to work out the puzzles, as if we're one of his foot-soldiers (chief among these being Amelia Sachs of course). If there's a criticism to be made of The Vanished Man, it's that there could be at least one ending too many, and I wondered if Deaver was showing off his creative skills for the sake of out-doing others in his peer group.

I've read several Rhyme novels now, they're all good or very good, and, importantly, always unique in their own way (by comparison I'm finding Ian Rankin's 'Rebus' story lines slightly one-dimensional) and I'd say that for the moment, The Vanished Man is Deaver's best yet.

I would also recommend some non-Rhyme novels such as Twisted and The Blue Nowhere. They will NOT disappoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars Deaver's Always a great read, 6 Jun 2003
This review is from: The Vanished Man (Hardcover)
Twists and turns and turns and twists Jeffrey Deaver keeps you guessing and more importantly page turning up to the very end. Forensic Science meets the world of Magic, Illusion and sleight of Hand. Earlier Deaver books are somewhat darker so if you are looking for a gentler introduction to Lincoln Rhyme , paraplegic forensic examiner, this book is a good place to start.
