Product Description

Vanished is the brilliant third instalment in the Top Ten bestselling David Raker series by Tim Weaver.

Look out for Tim Weaver's fifth David Raker thriller, available for pre-order soon from Penguin.

No life is perfect. Everyone has secrets.

For millions of Londoners, the morning of 17 December is just like any other. But not for Sam Wren. An hour after leaving home, he gets onto a tube train - and never gets off again. No eyewitnesses. No trace of him on security cameras. Six months later, he's still missing.

Out of options and desperate for answers, Sam's wife Julia hires David Raker to track him down. Raker has made a career out of finding the lost. He knows how they think. And, in missing person cases, the only certainty is that everyone has something to hide.

But in this case the secrets go deeper than anyone imagined.

For, as Raker starts to suspect that even the police are lying to him, someone is watching. Someone who knows what happened on the tube that day. And, with Raker in his sights, he'll do anything to keep Sam's secrets to himself . . .

Tim Weaver is a fantastic new thriller talent; Fans of Mo Hayder's Gone and Michael Marshall Smith's The Straw Men should look this way. Vanished is the third David Raker novel, following Chasing the Dead and The Dead Tracks. The latest title in the series is the R&J pick and Top Ten bestseller, Never Coming Back.

Praise for Tim Weaver:

'I couldn't put it down' - Sun

'Weaver's books get better each time - tense, complex, sometimes horrific, written with flair as well as care' - Guardian

He is married with a young daughter, and lives near Bath. 5.0 out of 5 stars Never saw that one coming 20 Feb 2013

When Sam Wren mysteriously goes missing, his wife, Julia hires Private Detective David Raker to find him. Sam was last seen on the tube at Gloucester Road 6 months ago - and he appeard to just vanish into thin air, as if he never existed.

Vanished is Tim Weaver's third David Raker novel, the first of its kind I've read, and i thoroughly enjoyed it, particualarly the London Underground slant. This is an exciting, well written story of which held my attention throughout -- as tightly as the cuffs which bound 'The Snatcher's' victims. I also enjoyed the unexpected outcome I never saw coming, and that's quite unusal for me to not spot a final twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, compulsive, captivating... 26 May 2012

'Vanished' had me hooked from page 1 and captured my imagination through to the end. It is a well crafted psychological thriller in which the reader is kept wondering 'who dun it' until the last few pages. It is violent in parts but this simply gives credence to the suspense which builds up as the reader journeys through the story. 'Vanished' poses a number of questions; for instance how can someone taking a routine journey on the Circle Line in London get onto a train and not be seen to get off' and still be missing some months later. How, why and where are the questions which Julia Wren, the missing man's wife, hires David Raker to find the answers to. But did he take on more than he bargained for? The author makes effective use of the London Underground system, and in particular the Circle Line. I was born in London and was a frequent user of the Underground system, and there were many occasions during the story which really made my flesh creep. Atmospheric, creepy, and in parts the stuff of which nightmares are made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanished 5 Jun 2012
By A. Lucas TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What an absolutely brilliant book. I just couldn't put it down once I'd started to read it. The story is so clever and has so many bits woven into it that you just don't expect. I'm a newcomer to Tim Weaver's books - but I will most definitely be reading eerything else I can find of his! I loved the characters in Vanished - I really ended up caring about them (and even feeling sorry for the 'baddies' in a way). There were some horrible bits, which were extremely graphic and disturbing, but they didn't seem gratuitious at all - all quite necessary for the story.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good murder mystery - it's such a great read. My only little moan was the ending - I didn't want it to turn out like that...... but apart from that, I loved this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thriller that runs out of steam 27 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Vanished is a book which is fundamentally based on adult themes. The books starts off well and draws you in with an unexplained disappearance. The story continues to engage as we follow the main protagonist and his investigation into this disappearance. However, the story entwines another thread into this story which is based around other disappearances. These all linked by the crime scene and the hair that is left behind. These stories inevitable become linked and as they do the book becomes ever more unlikely. The situations created to allow the story to progress seem 'forced' and the adult themes become ever more gruesome. The final act was actually the most believable element of the story but the book was quite hard work to complete. Prospective buyers should also be aware that when I say adult themes are prevalent they really are and I'd suggest it isn't for the faint hearted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it... 16 Aug 2012
By John TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm not normally one for reading modern British thriller/mystery novels; I'm currently ploughing my way through the Nordic/Icelandic/Scandinavian/European detective/thriller/mystery novels as I like a change in scene and home territory is too familiar - it's easy to be over critical knowing the cultural context. However, I really enjoyed this novel by Tim Weaver. The action was fast paced, the plot well thought through (although at times predictable) and it certainly maintained my interest from start to finish. I'm not a fan of overly gruesome and grisly murder/death but Weaver keeps the details relatively succinct and it's integral to the plot. I also may possibly be able to navigate the London Underground now as well. I haven't read any of Weaver's other books in the series and it'll be a while before I get round to them, but on this outing I probably will fill in the gaps.

Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Vanished is a decent enough read with plenty of plot twists and well developed characters. There's an almost gothic feel running alongside the modern storyline and it's mostly a winning formula, though quite ordinary and typical of it's genre. In Vanished the police are chasing down a serial killer with a fetish for hair but my main problem is; the whole thing's slightly unbelievable. The police arrive at the scene of crime and there's nothing left but a pile of hair, it doesn't work for me, I found the concept somewhat silly. Despite that; Tim Weaver has managed to produce a relatively slick, nasty and mysterious serial killer who provides enough chills to keep the story ticking over. I did enjoy the vanishing aspect of the plot, someone gets on a train and is never seen again, they just disappear, gone, that's spooky. I've given Vanished 3 stars and not 4 because there are too many coincidences, the plot over-reaches itself and I was somewhat frustrated trying to make all of the pieces fit. Vanished is too padded out, there's often too much going on and a shorter book would have delivered more tension and kept the pages turning.
