The Symphony in A flat major -an exceedingly rare key! -is especially noteworthy, also the one in c minor. The orchestra plays with passion and conviction.

This is an excellent recording of wonderful music. Outstanding playing from the orchestra and the sound is both detailed and beautifully mellow. Buy with confidence. As an aside, what a rare and incredible evening in Vienna it must have been in the 1780s when Mozart(viola),Haydn(1st violin),Dittersdorf(2nd violin) and Vanhal on cello played string quartets together. Vanhal was highly thought of by the others and was one of the few composers (if not the first) who made a very comfortable living from his compositions without having to depend on a patron ,unlike the others. His music was that popular and we can now hear why.

Yet more great works from this greatly neglected master of melody. Unlike the 3 movement symphonies on vol.1 these 4 works each have a minuet - and lovely they are too making this disc even more of a joy. Sound/performances are excellent and anyone who loves 18th century symphonies will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Give Us More. He wrote some 70 sym.s 17 Mar 2008

Vanhal was a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn. He was close to each of these composers and after listening to his symphonies, it's no wonder why. Vanhal is the genius equivalent of Mozart & Haydn and is completely underrated. He wrote very dashing energetic melodies and rhythms to his sym.s. They are truly great works.

Best of the Series 26 Sep 2011
By Jeffrey M. Bailey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
These symphonies by Vanhal rank right up there with his contemporaries in quality, depth, and melodic content. They are a real joy to listen to, and the Naxos sound quality is typically clear and bright. Every disc in the series is worth acquiring, however, I think this is the strongest collection yet. Will please anyone with a preference for the symphonies of Haydn and Mozart.

Masterful. 25 Nov 2012
By John - Published on Amazon.com

Naxos have four volumes of this rediscovered Czech composer who lived in Vienna at the time of Mozart, Dittersdorf and Haydn.Vanhal used to combine with them to play String Quartets! This Volume No. 3 is masterful and original. In the Symphony in A flat major, the second movement Adagio, is played by a solo horn and strings. It's sheer beauty is gently carried into the third movement the Menuetto, and gently fades. It reminds me of an 18th Century version of Mahler's famous Adagio from his 5th Symphony- it wouldn't surprise me if Mahler was inspired by this music of Valhal.
The Orchestra here is tops , the performances expressive and neat. CD sound is excellent.Anyone interested in 18th Century music will delight in having this CD.

Terrific 29 Sep 2012
By J. R. Trtek - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Like reviewers who have come before me, I was awed by the works on this disc. And, as has been mentioned, there are actually four discs in this series from Naxos, though not all by the same forces. In my view, of the four, this is the strongest. The Symphonies in D major and C minor in particular are bold, assertive works, but all four are distinctive in their way. I'd put volumes 1 and 2 in second place, while I found the fourth installment in this series to be good, but to me the music itself was a bit more tame if still well-constructed. If you're looking for a second tier go-to composer for the Classical era, I don't think you can go wrong with old Johann Baptist Vanhal.

dig vanhal 12 April 2010

Vanhal's symphonies are engrossing and beautiful. That he is an undiscovered country, makes them all the more surprising and lovely.
