Love Naxos' 18th-century music CDs; performances are sluggish here, though 29 Nov 2006
By Catone in Utica - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I love Naxos' 18th-century music CDs; it's always a treat to hear first-ever recordings of shamefully neglected works like the symphonies of Johann Stamitz and GB Sammartini (pivotal in the development of the symphony!), as well as contemporaries of Haydn and Mozart such as Ordonez and Vanhal.

The performances of the concerti, though? Idiosyncratic to say the least. Muller-Bruhl takes the third movement of the first concerto, an allegro, as if it were andante. The result is like pouring molassas over the orchestra and the soloist. What was he thinking?!

Indeed, every movement tends toward slugishness, but in the allegro moderato first movements it's a bit more justified. But three plodding movements in a row for every concerto makes the music sound like Haydn's Seven Last Words.

Please, Naxos: no more Muller-Bruhl recordings! Stick with the New Zealand CO, Nicholas Esterhazy Orchestra, Toronto Camerata, et al, and put Muller-Bruhl out to pasture.

Ironic 26 Jan 2010
By Ken Cox - Published on Amazon.com

How ironic.

I heard this performance on a local classical music station and I enjoyed it so much I devoted an hour of my time to identifying it and finding it on Amazon.

I listened to the previews and, yes, I have indeed found the same performance that so moved me on the radio.

I had no expectations to have violated, and so enjoyed this performance on its own merits.

The soloist, to my mind, interpreted the music beautifully, with great depth, sensitivity and tonal virtuosity.

From the quality of the recording I could hear each instrument played separately, and the various parts gave me a great appreciation of Vanhal's intent.

Breadth, depth, layers, surprise harmonies and accents.

For me, this has it all.

The above said, if you have a lot of experience with this composer, Vanhal, you might find the reveiws above more relevant.

I had NO expectations and loved this recording.

If I had a time machine, I would take this recording back to Vanhal and let him listen to it.
