Mark Griffin's excellent book covers the recording career of one of the greatest composers and musicians of our day, Vangelis. Mainly in Chronological order, he takes us from the 1960s Aphrodite's Child to the release of Oceanic in 1997. The are some minor errors (forgiven): "Chung Kuo" was used by the BBC for the Seoul Olympics in 1988 (not "Chariots of Fire"), and notably the vinyl LP (UK released) versions of 'Direct' and 'Themes' differed from their CD replacements in that certain tracks were missing from the vinyls, namely "Dial Out" and "Intergalactic Radio Station" from 'Direct'; and "Five Circles" from 'Themes'. Ok, I'm being very piccy in what is an excellently produced book, so I apologise. A great read for all Vangelis fans of which I am one!

Vangelis the Enigma 27 Sep 2002
By S. Nock
Format:Paperback
Quite simply the best musical tribute to a single artist. Many times reading behind the music is a dull occupation, with no greater insight learned as to what make an artist tick. But this lands at the other end of the spectrum. From his early roots through to almost present day, this book chronicles the thinking behind the man and how that translated into some of the most evocative albums of our time. With a lot of his work still under wraps it is amzing to uncover the wealth of music written for soundtracks yet unreleased by Vangelis for fear of being seen as too commercial. Just one thought on this, perhaps we could be the judge of that, as after all, you don't have to buy them. Liked the music? Now find out about the man.

Format:Paperback
Mark Griffin is clearly a Vangelis buff of the first order. His book is a clearly laid-out overview of the famous Greek's immense output, which includes numerous solo albums, filmscores and ballets, and covers his career up to the 'Oceanic' album.

The writing style is very accessible, punctuated with quotes from Vangelis and people who have worked for him. It's not an official bio, so Vangelis himself wasn't involved in the book, but it doesn't suffer for it.

There are also some good b&w photos, some of which are exclusive to this book. Sections at the back give you various discographies and even a gear list.
