Amazon.co.uk Review
If, inside every large woman, there's a thin one longing to get out, TV presenter Vanessa Feltz has proved you can liberate her. Vanessa's workout video starts with a black-and-white retrospective of the fat celebrity we all once knew. In a voiceover, she tells us of the insults she had to endure, such as being called "Mrs Blobby". She was so unfit she couldn't climb stairs and was scared of getting stuck in turnstiles. The video goes colour to reveal the new Vanessa. Her misery ended, she tells us, when her now ex-husband ("ex" is said with relish) issued an ultimatum: "Lose weight, or lose me." She lost both, and feels all the better for it. She has shrunk from size 24 to size 12. How did Vanessa do it? The answer is Dennis Duhaney, a charming taskmaster with dreadlocks and a London accent.

Before launching into Dennis's aerobic exercises, Vanessa explains his eating plan. Drink lots of water, have five portions of fruit and veg daily, eat little and often, and make your last meal early in the evening. Then, with a warning to anyone with doubts to see their doctor first, the warm-up begins. The exercise routines become progressively harder and faster, moving through Gear One to Gear Four. Essentially, they are variations of marching, boxing and kicking done to the beat of a background soundtrack. Handheld weights come into it towards the end of the video, but Vanessa says tins of baked beans will do just as well. It finishes with a cool down which is vaguely based on yoga. To follow the routines, you'd need plenty of space, and preferably a sprung floor. So, could this video help you lose over four stone in 12 weeks, as Vanessa claims on the video cover? Maybe. But, probably, only if Dennis came with it. --Joan Byrne

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow with great results, 11 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Being badly over weight I finally decieded to do something about it in feb 2001 I brought this video starting with the gentle warm up ,gear one and stretch and cool down. Within two weeks I was ready to move up to gear two and gear four .The exercises becoming more intense kicking and boxing the killer knees up and the high low.Within eight weeks I was ready to do the whole video a good one and a half hour work out. I enjoyed making progress and have managed to lose over three stone and three dress sizes. Thankyou Vanessa for looking as though it was hard work it made it easier to keep going and not reach for the bar of chocolate. I would recommened this video if you haven't exercised for a long time peel yourself out of your chair and get moving as she says "IF I CAN YOU CAN".

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Exercise Video I've found for Real Women!, 13 Mar 2002
I was pleasantly surprised by this video - a really interesting format of warm up, 3 levels of aerobics, punches and kicks, free weights and floor work. All in manageable stages. Unlike a lot of videos or classes - this is NOT 'prancing around in leotards'! It's sensible, structured and clearly explained exercises for real women. Easy to do in a small space and easy to adapt into 10 minute sections if you don't have time to do the whole tape. The male instructor with Vanessa is a hunk (always a bonus). The presentation is friendly, good humoured, encouraging and confidence-building. The variety of exercises makes it all the more interesting and motivational. Even if you're not a Vanessa fan - this video will change your mind, your body, and your attitude to getting in shape. Thank you Vanessa!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives me hope!, 19 Aug 2003
By A Customer
I've had Vanessa's video tucked away in a cupboard for over a year (along with an array of other tried and tested aerobic vids from my fitter days). In January this year I was almost 22 stone and was unable to do any exercise. I did actually try out the video when I first got it and couldn't even complete the warm-up! However, I have lost four stone slowly since then (still going strong) and have been walking an hour a day for six months, so felt ready to tackle more exercise so I dusted it off and have been doing the entire work out four times a week for the last month.

The big positive about the video is it gives hope because it's from someone who's had a less than perfect body in the past. I think for someone who is seriously overweight, there is nothing more depressing than exercising with Cindy Crawford or Cher, who have never had real problems with their weight, only a clear obsession about making their perfect bodies even more perfect. That just makes me think 'what's the point'. However, I find Vanessa inspiring as she's been there, isn't claiming to be perfect now (a 'work in progress'), and offers a realistic exercise programme for those who are in the position she was once in. I noticed that other people who reviewed the tape were bleating on about how unchallenging it was. Well obviously if you're fit and around normal weight, it might not be for you. But I think 'If I can, you can' is clearly appealing to a different kind of audience, those with a lot of weight to lose.

I think the diet recommendations at the start of the video are quite worrying, they are a bit too restrictive for someone to maintain long term and I do wonder about anyone who loses four and a half stone in 12 weeks, I find that rapid weight loss worrying.

I find the work-out, which takes just over an hour, quite invigorating. First gear is quite straightforward traditional aerobics moves/ I found the boxing moves in second gear weird to start with, but have got used to them and now enjoy punching and kicking away. Then third gear consolidates all of it. I enjoy the weights section in fourth gear (have just invested in some dumbells) and my arms are showing signs of improvement already. The stomach exercises are again easy but doable, which again is more likely to encourage those with little muscle tone to have a go.

I do find I sweat a lot and am slightly out of puff, but never uncomfortably so. It goes at quite a slow pace and is definately gentler than other videos I have followed, but it will be challenging enough for those like me with lots to lose. I think it's important to me to have a work out that I can do from start to finish and that will make some improvements to my fitness that I can progress later on. I think a more challenging work out would be beyond my capabilities at the moment, so it is to be congratulated for getting the level right.

The only thing I find incredibly annoying about the video is the rubbish music (it sounds like someone with a synthesiser and a woman repeating 'alright, alright, alright') and the workout is not always timed to go with the music which can be confusing. Also some of the moves are not explained properly, they just launch into a new step, but this is less of a problem as you become familiar with the routine.

I find Vanessa very likeable - I think it's cool to knock her - but I think she's fab. I like the way she goes on strike and looks like she's flagging every now and then as it usually coincides with me losing the will to live also. Good video for the seriously overweight without a doubt!
