Book Description

Eric Widmaier (Boston University), Hershel Raff (Medical College of Wisconsin), and Kevin Strang (University of Wisconsin) have taken on the challenge of maintaining the strengths and reputation of Vander’s Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function. Moving beyond the listing of mere facts, it stressed the causal chains of events that constitute the mechanisms of body function. The fundamental purpose of this textbook is to present the principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduates regardless of academic background or field of study. `

Vander’s Human Physiology, eleventh edition, carries on the tradition of clarity and accuracy, while refining and updating the content to meet the needs of today’s instructors and students. The eleventh edition features a streamlined, clinically oriented focus to the study of human body systems. It has also responded to reviewer requests for more clinical applications. Chapter 19 is new and contains three complete case studies. Physiology Inquiries have also been added to many figures throughout the chapters. These critical-thinking questions are just one more opportunity to add to the student’s learning experience.

I was sceptical to say the least about this textbook after picking up some other "recommended" textbooks on my first year reading list. However, during my revision for May exams I was struggling to grasp and fully understand some concepts. Seeing this, a friend recommended I go and look up this book on our library, and I was blown away. It's been helpful before belief and I went online and brought a copy straight away (it's a good, popular book, don't expect to be able to borrow this from the library for longer then a day!). It's so important that you completely understand the basics for second year modules based of this (neuroscience for example).

If you want to get it, buy early in the term and make constant use out of it. Physiology is not a subject to take lightly and is arguably one of the hardest modules on the CYO programme. However armed with this book you should fly through your summer exams!

The book was in good condition and was delivered on time. Extremely happy with the purchase and the whole procedure, therefore no complaints are to be made.

4.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive 24 Sep 2011

This is certainly a well planned, written and presented text in physiology that has been complemented with diagrams and questions throughout. It will require dedicated time for to sit and read through the text and it assumes the reader does not have much knowledge at all (which can be bonus if you prefer). It is comprehensive and so you should start reading throught it at the beginning of the year (1st year med students).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text book 8 Jan 2011
I am a medical student and I find this text book excellent. The text gives very clear explanations of physiological principals and the science is illustrated with clinical examples. The diagrams aid understanding and I feel it is in the right amount of depth for medical students. Highly recommended.

When I eventually got my Vander's Human Physiology (11th Ed.) from McGraw-Hill, I can say I was thoroughly pleased with the depth and style of writing from Widmaier et al. Diagrams are easy to understand and the book maintains fluidity as a whole. It is definitely recommended for 1st/ 2nd year Med students.

The HIGHLY unsatisfactory part of my dealing with Amazon was the wait of TWO MONTHS for this textbook. Had I been told the ACTUAL estimated date of dispatch I would have cancelled right away. 5 times I was re-advised on the dispatch date and delivery date. I normally very few problems with Amazon's delivery speeds but I have definitely been let down this time.
