5.0 out of 5 stars Not as dark as Wallander 25 Jan 2012
Hakan Nesser is getting more and more popular and obviously so is his character Van Veeteren.
The movie length episodes are very similar to the books. The character of Van Veeteren is determined,
clever, a bit pompous, divorced and almost due to retire. A slightly over weight Morse. He listens to classical music
dislikes his ex-wife Renata and has a son in jail for drugs offences. In the books he is pre retirement in the movies he has just retired.
The stories are watchable but you may guess the end of Borkmanns point. Carambole is very sad and I still need to watch Munster's Case.
I enjoyed the two cases that I have watched and I would recommend these tv movies to anyone who likes Wallander, Beck or Irene Huss.

Van Veeteren is a superbly acted and scripted series. The episodes are filled with suspense and are unique in their originality. Another winner to be sure

4.0 out of 5 stars First Van Veeteren collection 30 Jan 2013
By Amazon Customer TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The films about Van Veeteren are based on Haakan Nesser's bestseller novels around the fictive North European city of Maardam and follows the retired Chief Inspector Van Veeteren (Sven Wollter) and his two successors Inspectors Munster (Thomas Hanzon) and Moreno (Eva Rexed).

There are three movie length instalments on this DVD starting with Borkmann's Point which takes off as Van Veeteren retires and decides to follow his estranged son, who is on probation, to the seaside town of Kaalbringen. Before leaving work, Van Veeteren hear about a decapitation murder case and when a similar case turns up in Kaalbringen, Van Veeteren uses a former colleague to gain access to the investigation and can't help but offer his expertise.

The quiet, dedicated policeman is by now fairly familiar, but it is done very well with good acting all around and a story that I actually felt worked better as a film than the book which I read years ago. As this is the first in series (film-wise at least, I believe it is the 2nd instalment in the Swedish book series), the characters have not yet established themselves completely, but it looks good! If you're a fan of the Beck and Wallander series, this is definitely one for the collection.
Extras - biography of the three main characters (in Swedish).
There are English, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish subtitles on the films

Munsters sag:
Bon Jovi lookalike Munster (Thomas Hanzon) is first on the scene and therefore in charge of a case where a famous wine dealer is found dead by a blow to the head. The new Chief Inspector Reinhardt, however, decides to take over - like he seems to do with all important and press-attractive cases.
