CD Description

* The songs of the late Van McCoy have been part of the soundtrack to everyone's life for more than fifty years. He became a hit artist in his own right in the mid-70s, thanks to `The Hustle', but it's his creativity as a composer/arranger in the 60s that has beguiled soul fans.

* Universally-admired figures; McCoy has long been overdue for an appearance in Ace/Kent's ongoing songwriter and producer series. "The Sweetest Feeling" affords Van the kind of salute that talent of his stature deserves.

* There will be a second volume of Van's songs and productions from Kent next year, concentrating primarily on the tracks that have filled Northern and crossover soul dancefloors over the past 40 years. "The Sweetest Feeling" is a more across the board affair that offers a spellbinding selection of sumptuous ballads, uptown and big city soul classics, national chart smashes - and, of course, more than a few of those tried and trusted Northern favourites.

* Featured artists, including Jackie Wilson, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Erma Franklin, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler, Esther Phillips, Irma Thomas and Chuck Jackson, show that McCoy`s songs were invariably given the VIP treatment by the biggest stars in the soul firmament.

* Van McCoy was only 39 when he died, leaving a catalogue of material that was as excellent as it was abundant. Very few soul songwriters have ever matched quality and quantity to quite the same lasting effect. The 24 songs featured on "The Sweetest Feeling" offer full proof of his all-around talents and will leave everyone eager for more.

A Fitting Tribute 21 April 2010
By Mrs. T. A. Papworth TOP 1000 REVIEWER

The only thing wrong with this cd is the very poor front cover design. Now that's off my chest the music on this cd is simply fantastic (another top quality release from Ace/Kent). The first 15 tracks are all 60's gems, you know your in for a treat as soon as the opening bars of Erma Franklins version of 'Sweetest feeling' starts playing. Too many highlights to mention but a few would be 'When you're young...' Ruby & the Romatics, 'For You' the Spellbinders, the heart breaking 'Why dont you love me' Teri Thornton, the fantastic uptempo 'Stop & get a hold of myself' Gladys Knight and my favourite the northern soul classic 'Nothing worse than being alone' The Ad Libs. Don't take my word for it, hear for yourself - this cd is excellent. Please lets have a volume 2.

They're after your money 21 April 2012
By Richard
A hustle is a confidence trick.Or in the case of Van McCoy a new dance which was forecast in 1962 when Goffin & King wrote a song called Up On The Roof which contained the line "get away from the hustling crowd"
McCoy was one of those names you began to notice on credits and usually meant classy songs like by Gladys Knight or Ruby & the Romantics. This was the age of a more orchestrated soul which was called at the time New Wave R & B and took in elements of Leiber/Stoller in the use of tympani. It was so much better than the disco music associated with McCoy in the 70s when he & the Soul City Symphony had 4 hit singles yet even the Hustle is no more than a tuneless dirge if you compare it to the 60s songs and showed the rot on the way from the end of the decade.
Truly his classic period as a producer and writer was in the 60s
His shockingly early passing of a man whose writings had been compared to Burt Bacharach would mean until the Ace compilation he was just one more forgotten name who'd had a couple of Top 5 singles
In fact this photo has had the ladder airbrushed out and is McCoy climbing up to the roof for inspiration

An under-appreciated genius 15 Jun 2010
By Warren M. Lankford - Published on Amazon.com

Ace and Kent Soul have consistently done a great service for music lovers with their producer/songwriter CD series. This CD celebrates the songwriting, production and arranging genius of Van McCoy. My first knowledge of him was his worldwide hit, "The Hustle", then Melba Moore's classic "Lean on Me" after that. It was a few years after his passing when I understood more about the scope of his work, even songs that I loved that I didn't know he was responsible for.

This compilation is a really good overview of his work. Along with "Lean on Me" there are other classics such as Donny Hathaway's "Giving Up", the original "When You're Young and In Love" by Ruby and the Romantics and "Baby I'm Yours" by Barbara Lewis. The special discovery for me personally is hearing great songs of his for the first time. My personal standouts were "I Get the Sweetest Feeling" by Erma Franklin, "I've Lost You" by Jackie Wilson, "Where Does That Leave Me" by Nancy Wilson and "Some Things You Never Get Used To" by Little Esther Phillips.

For me there really isn't a weak song in this compilation. The variety of different artists and the variety in musical arrangements show what a production genius McCoy was. A tragically premature loss of one of the greats. Although this only scratches the surface of the large volume of great work that he did, again this is a good overview and I recommend it highly.
