5.0 out of 5 stars A surprising and informative study, 11 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Vincent Van Gogh didn't just paint pictures; he took a turbulent path through life that Andrew Forrest has traced mainly through analysis of his huge body of correspondance. This beautifully researched book offers insights into each aspect of Van Gogh's character that shaped his development as an artistic genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars An admirable introduction to Vincent van Gogh, 22 Sep 2002
By A Customer
'Van Gogh: A Beginner's Guide' sustains the reader's interest throughout. It examines who and what influenced Van Gogh and, in turn, his influence on other artists. It also helps the reader to appreciate Van Gogh's unique powers as a letter-writer. An added bonus is the last chapter, 'The Van Gogh Phenomenon: 1950-2000', which looks at Van Gogh exhibitions, portrayals of the artist in film and music, and the work of art historians in the field of Van Gogh studies.
