The Burlington Magazine, February 2005

'....this magnum orpus defines and refines our knowledge of Anthony Van Dyck's paintings.'

Product Description

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) is among the greatest portrait painters of all time. The 1990s opened and closed with major exhibitions devoted to his work and this is a catalogue raisonne of his painted oeuvre. A native of Antwerp, Van Dyck also lived and worked for long periods in Italy and England, where his brief, productive life ended. He is best known for his work at the court of Charles I of England and his images of Charles and his Queen, Henrietta Maria, combine imperial tradition with a lyricism that is unique. The full-length portraits of aristocrats in the Caroline court and in Genoa, Antwerp, Brussels and The Hague set a standard for elegance, grandeur and personal insight that influenced the history of Western portraiture into the 20th century in the work of John Singer Sargent. Like Titian, whom he admired and whose artistic legacy he transformed and handed on, Van Dyck was as gifted with religious and mythological subjects as he was with portraits. He pioneered means of expressing personal piety and intimacy that would dominate later 17th-and 18th-century religious art throughout Catholic Europe. This manual includes a reproduction of every known authentic painting by the artist, the provenance and the significant facts and literature on each. The catalogue raisonne is a collaboration and an international team has produced this study of an international artist.

A book so heavy it justifies the cost. A complete catalogue of Van Dyck's paintings in both colour (especially the major works) and black and white. Highly informative text accompanies each work with full details of provenance, condition and critical analysis, etc. The occasional work is re-attributed to the master and doubts are expressed about others. However, a volume such as this has to be necessarily controversial. My only complaint is the lack of a separate index of paintings by location and one has to consult the general index for this information which can be tedious. Comes well presented in a protective and attractive case. I would recommend this title very highly.

Could do with some colour 23 Aug 2005
By Daniel Clode - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For such a large size book it is very disappointing that there are so few colour images and such as are printed are not on the scale of size that would let the reader revel in the finer detail of Van Dyck's work. It is understandable that the catalogue section of the book was Black & White for reasons of economy, but the preceding pages could have benefited from colour close-ups and full page plates. The book may be useful for a scholar, but it will remain to other books to exemplify the genius of Van Dyck. There is a more affordable and enjoyable option in Christopher Brown's book "Anthony Van Dyck" published by Rizzoli in 1999.

Lack of color detroys what should have been a masterpiece 1 Dec 2007
By R. Blair - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Van Dyck is one of my favorite painters and I was looking forward to this updated catalogue raisonne as the previous one published in the mid 80's had a a mere 100 paintings reproduced in color.I was prepared to spend a large sum of money so I could have access to most of his paintings reproduced in color. This book had the potential to be one of tha great art books. It is beautifully laid out into four different periods and the color reproductions are of a high standard and the majority are a good size. The major problem with the book is that a paltry 190 out of 900 paintings are reproduced in color. In this era,a catalogue raisonne should have the majority of works in color(take a look at the Velazquez,Soutine,Rothko,Newman and O'Keeffe),B/W reproductions aren't worth a glance.I'm now having second thoughts about buying this even at Amazon's reduced price($135).A major disappointment.
