Synopsis
Nicolas Cage plays Peter Loew, a sleazy literary agent who prowls the bars in the evening looking for some action. One night he hooks up with Jennifer Beals, and in the course of their relations, she bites him on the neck. When he wakes up the next morning, Peter doesn't feel quite right. He is irritable, and has a hard time dealing with life at the literary agency, where his secretary takes the brunt of his ire. Suddenly, it dawns on Peter that he was bitten by a vampire, so he goes out and buys a set of real fangs. However, mere plot exposition can't begin to get at what makes this movie so incredible. Well, the film itself isn't really incredible, it's Cage's performance. Here, it seems, he was given free rein to act like a total madman. There is absolutely no precedent for this performance anywhere in film history, and Cage is a wonder to watch. Though this film is usually only mentioned when people want to talk about how Cage ate a live cockroach once because he insisted on absolute realism, his performance here dwarfs everything else he's ever done. The movie might be rather silly, what with its rather pretentious device of using Peter's transformation into a vampire as a metaphor for his other life as a parasitic literary agent and lady-killer, but Cage overacts so stunningly that you can't take your eyes off the film for a second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Black Comedy, 30 Sep 2006
By Green Man Music "green-man-music" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Nicholas Cage is absolutely superb as the literary agent who suffers a catastrophic breakdown and becomes delusional, believing himself to have been seduced and bitten by a vampire, and undergoes a psychosomatic transformation into nosferatu.

Cage's character's personality, which begins as an arrogant, successful bully of a manager, gradually becomes one of an unhinged loon as his bullying - in particular the painfully nasty persecution of his beautiful hispanic assistant Alba - reaches a crescendo and he begins to mimic nosferatu's mannerisms whilst wearing plastic teeth.

His vampiric seductress visits him regulary to reinforce his delusions. His relationship with his lovely girlfriend begins to break down completely as he is lured ever more deeply into the world of the vampiress in his mind. Finally when he believes he can no longer see his own reflection in a mirror, he becomes as one with the vampiress and steps out of reality completely.

This film has one or two shocking moments, and some of it is also very sad; his treatment of his girlfriend, and in particular the diabolical treatment of his persecuted assistant Alba, are cases in point. But it is also a very funny black comedy, helped along by Cage's repertoire of facial expressions and affected accents.

If Alan Partridge were to become a vampire, I suspect it would look something like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Hmmmm", 7 Jun 2006
By M. D. Hart "Boz Phiz @ DVD" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The central story here surrounds that of Peter Loew (Cage) who is a literary agent and serial womaniser. When one of his conquests bites him on the neck he begins to believe that he is a vampire and acts the part by rejecting sunlight and avoiding the crucifix. As ridiculous as this sounds, the film really does do a good job of setting up the psychological decline of an already disturbed soul. To be honest you will need to watch this more than once in order to understand the semi-existant nature of the woman that bites Loew and not until the very end will you understand the twist, but if you buy this film for anything buy it for Cage's performance. Made in 1989 this film is one of Cage's earlier efforts and he is superbly funny in a dark way; the scene in the night club where he wears plastic vampire teeth will make you laugh to no end, if not for the story just the strange change in what we are used to from Nic. Supporting cast are fine too but they really do feed off of Cage and rely on him heavily. luckily for them he keeps up the tempo and pulls off the psychology really well, constructing a coffin for himself our of an up-turned leather sofa balanced on books along the way. Do not mistake the fun for a lack of seriousness, Cage's charcater is seriously disturbed and resorts to murder, rape and wickedness throught what is a very erotically charged narrative so if these elements disturb you, maybe this isn't the film for you. For the Cage fans out there, you must buy this. The lost fifth star is for a disappointingly rushed ending, but overall worth a long look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Legendary performance Nicholas Cage, 28 Oct 2005
One of the great mysteries to me in the movie industry is how come that this early work starring Nicholas Cage has not made it to cult status yet - as have many movies in the Hilarious Horror Parody genre.
The story line is too absurd to even bother, but the actor performances are stellar. Especially young Nicholas Cage is legendary in the scene where he argues with his secretary what is so difficult about the alfabet. This should be a standard scene in all performance art classes.
Cage is outward brilliant throughout the movie, for the intensity and conviction with which he plays this overtly absurd character. Vampire's kiss is a true gem for Cage fans, and at the very least a mildly amusing spectacle for all others.
