Charlotte Montague here offers us a great big harback on the subject of vampires and vampirism. From religion through to superstition, folklore, urban myths and myths and legends this also goes onto case histories of people like Vlad the Impaler and Elizabeth Bathory and others. We are then taken through vampires in rock, literature and films.

Full of illustrations and photos there is a lot to keep you interested in this book as you follow the medieval vampire that caused real horror, onto the erotic undertones of the literary vampire, and how the image of the vampire has changed once again into today's more sympathetic alienated creature.

I must admit that I came across this book quite by chance and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I think that this is something to keep in mind for a great present idea.

I bought this book when I spotted it in a shop; it's a very enlightening read.
The book starts by giving lots of folk law and superstition as to what people used to believe in many different countries, starting from when people believed that vampires were more zombie like animated corpses. The book then takes you through developing how the vampires have been thought of right up to the romantic view we have of vampires today. The book then starts to look at popular media which depicted vampires, from a Victorian comic to popular novels (like Dracula and interview with a vampire) to the Hollywood movies of today (like twilight)
The book also looks at facts as to why people started believing in vampires like information on dieses that people contracted which could have been mistaken for vampirism. It also looks at people through history which have been suggested to be vampires like Elizabeth Bathory and Vald the Impaler.
If your looking for a book that gives you many tales and folk law, mixed in with how this could have developed into today's view, with a few facts to help support the old theories, quirky superstition, media knowledge and characters from history then this is a great book for you.
