Product Description

A horror/fantasy trilogy of epic proportions, set on the vampire homeworld first explored in the third book of Brian Lumley's necroscope series, the source.

About the Author

Brian Lumley was born in the coal-mining village of Hordern, County Durham. At the age of twenty-one, he was called up for National Service and was assigned to the Royal Military Police. He subsequently joined up and in his 22 years of service travelled widely.

A devotee of horror and fantasy fiction all his life, he began writing while still in the army in the 1960s and his first stories were published in America. His early influence was that of H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos cycle of fiction. After returning to civilian life in 1981, Brian Lumley became a full-time writer and began working on his longer, more ambitious novels: first the Psychomech trilogy, then individual novels such as Demogorgon and House of Doors, culminating in the highly original series of bestselling Vampire novels, the five Necroscope books. Blood Brothers and The Last Aerie, both published in ROC, are the first two volumes of his new trilogy, Vampire World, a spin-off from the Necroscope series. Blood Wars is the last volume of the trilogy. Fruiting Bodies and Other Fungi and Return of the Deep Ones and Other Mythos Tales are also published in the ROC series.

With more than thirty books and over a hundred short stories published in English, Brian Lumley has also had his work translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese and, most recently, Polish. His story 'Fruiting Bodies' won the British Fantasy Award for the Best Short Story and he has also been the recipient of Fear Magazine's Award for Necroscope III: The Source.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining, if long, book of war, blood and vampires, 24 Sep 2010

This review is from: Vampire World 3: Blood Wars (Roc S.) (Paperback)
Brian Lumley is something of a guilty pleasure of mine. He is unashamedly a 'blokey' writer. His vampire novels are littered with gore, violence, revenge and war. In fact, his background in the military often shines through. The delight with which he details the tactics and manoeuvres of his characters as they engage in bloody battle is part of the allure of his books, and in Bloodwars it naturally reaches a powerful climax.

Lumley is unafraid to retcon, to be shamelessly 'genre', to mix and match everything from spies to vampires to werewolves to other world settings. And he does it with such aplomb and relish, it's difficult not to admire him.

No, this isn't high art; these vampires are the perfect antithesis to the necrophiliac teenage angst of Twilight and the homoeroticism of Anne Rice. But this is good fiction, enjoyable fiction, and despite its length you'll get through this in no time at all.

This was the final book in a trilogy. What can I say, Not only did this book captivate me, but I went through all the emotions with the characters to. From Love to fear, hatred to Honour. After I read the first I was desperate to read on. A real heart rendering sci-fi/horror, with twists and turns you would not believe. A Magnificent ending to the best set of books I have ever read. The story continues, but this book in particular will live in your mind forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging book, but with uneven pace, 9 Sep 2011
By Jones Hall - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Vampire World 3: Blood Wars (Roc S.) (Paperback)
This book is the third in a series about a world of vampires that can be accessed from Earth by a portal, actually a singularity who adversely affects the vampire world by creating a world that has permament night on one side and permament day on the other.

The vampires here are humans transformed by some sort of fungus into the blood sucking creatues of legends. Unlike classical legends, in the book the vampires can use the fungus and their own abilities to meld humans together, creating everything from flying beasts of burden to giant fighting creatures.

The armies of the vampires are on the march in this book, trying to conquer a new realm. A few people from Earth, armed with the best weapons they could carry enter the vampire world to try to help the human population.

The only problem with the book is its uneven pace. Sometimes events and things fly past you, other times the author gets stuck on some coversation and the plot grounds to a halt. Having said that, this is a very fun and interesting book for those who want a vampire book different to the vampires books of today, all inspired by Twilight.
