4.0 out of 5 stars book 14 and still loving this series!!! 14 Sept. 2013
    Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
this is the 14th book in Kerrelyn Sparks 'Love at Stakes'series, and the series is still going now many series would have dwindled and lost their appeal, but i can honestly say this one hasn't. the authour consistently comes up with great stories every time.
this latest installment in no exception.the characters are great, the pace fast and there is also a dose of humour.we get action, romance and even meet up with secondary characters from this series and also introduced to new ones!i was so pleased to learn about Laslow's past(the shy vampire scientist that plays with his buttons!).
these books are action packed, with sexy vampires, shifters, angels and demons. they're not dark urban fantasy type books, instead are lighthearted feel good reads, that hook you from the start.i cannot praise this series enough, it has gone from strength to strength. cant wait for the next one!
i think this book has the option of being read as a stand alone novel, but i think knowing more about what happened in the past would benefit a reader more.further,in my opinion the whole series is great so i don't think it would be a hardship to read other books in this series.
    series order:
    1. How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire (2005)
    2. Vamps and the City (2006)
    3. Be Still My Vampire Heart (2007)

3.0 out of 5 stars The Kilted Pirate and the Geneticist 6 Sept. 2013
    Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is book 14 in this series and while you may want to read this series from the start, it is not absolutely necessary, since the author puts in enough back-story for anyone to understand what is going on.

Dougal is a Vamp with many issues, which is okay since the woman he is going to fall for has issues also! The good Vamps re fighting bad vampires and a demon in this book. Dougal has recently lost his hand when fighting the Malcontents (a past bad guy group) and is learning to use his `bionic' hand.

Leah is a genetic scientist who the vamps need to help them win this fight. She is also the embodiment of the woman that Dougal had lost centuries ago. She is having a little trouble reconciling herself to the fact that vamps exist. It sure doesn't hurt matters when she see's sexy Dougal strolling around looking like a pirate in his kilt.

This is not only a relationship driven novel, but an action driven one as well and the author does a great job of blending both into one entertaining and fast read. The characters of Dougal and Leah were a little difficult for me to empathize with, since they are a tad whiny, but they grew on me after a while.
Reading this book would be a good way to relax over a lazy weekend. *ARC supplied by publisher*

I am a huge Kerrelyn fan and this book did not disappoint.
there was plenty of action and I fell in love with the characters all over again. I now have a new hero and he is a God Warrior! Say no more! Please bring out the next book soon Kerrelyn!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Probably more 3.5 5 Nov. 2013
By Tried and Tested VINE VOICE
    Format:Audio Download
I don't know whether it was because I was trying to get used to the idea of listening to a book but there were definitely parts of the audio that irritated me. I felt that the narrator made Dougal sound slightly slow and so I struggled to see him as a love interest.

There was meant to be two aspects to this book, the romance and the battle scenes. For me, there was too much emphasis put on the romance side and not enough on the battle scenes. The main battle is over with after a matter of minutes and I think this would have been much better and would have had a greater impact if it had been drawn out a little longer, as it was you never really felt the level of danger was heightened too much.

In contrast the romance was instant and fast paced, I found this to be too much in the earlier chapters of the book and desperately wanted it to slow down. As the novel progressed the romance aspect of the novel slowed down considerably and as a result it really grew on me. I started to ignore how slow Dougal sounded and concentrated on his character, who was immensely loveable in his attitude.

I think what spoiled this book for me was the narration, Costello didn't do a good job with Dougal, I don't know whether this was just because she was concentrating on his Scottish accent rather than letting his personality come through or just whether she doesn't do men very well. Additionally, I didn't think that her spoken voice necessarily reflected the mood correctly. There were times when Leah and Dougal were being playful and joking with each other, but there was not even a hint of a smile in the narrators voice.

I think the story was a 4star read but I would advise not to listen to the audio version

    1.0 out of 5 stars Poor 18 Mar. 2014
    By BobM
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I managed to plough through to the end of this pot-boiler, because it’s very rare that I don’t finish what I start, but I really wish I hadn’t bothered. A pretty obvious plot, with the solution signalled from very early on, trite, jejune, nudge-nudge wink-wink dialogue, shallow emotional development, these are just some of the inadequacies, and the list could go on for some time. The command of dialect is appallingly bad: ‘doona’ is some kind of Australian blanket, not Scots for ‘do not’, and the author obviously does not know that the traditional way of rendering ‘did not’ is ‘didnae’. It’s rarely a good idea to write dialect or represent accents anyway, but if one does it’s vital to be (a) accurate, (b) consistent and (c) comprehensive: shoving in the odd word to identify ethnic origin is just annoying and disruptive to the flow of dialogue. Writing ‘you’ and ‘ye’ in consecutive sentences in the same paragraph is just incompetent. If you’re a fan of this author don’t let me put you off, and enjoy as many stories as she can churn out - chacun à son goo (and yes, I know the correct French is goût, but I choose my words carefully). I’m certainly not wasting further time or money.
