So anyway, I can't stand books with rules in. I don't use dice, I never have, I never will. I don't really like scissors-paper-stone either. I have always felt that they got in the way of the game. Therefore, wherever any supplement comes out with more background info than dice charts, I tend to view that as a Good Thing. For those of you who disagree (and those of you after the latest "I can kill a werewolf by focusing my Qi through my belly button" power), sorry, this isn't the book for you.
It's excellent, because it's basically a handbook on How Not To Be a Jerk While Roleplaying. And I know at least seven people who could do with being made to read it at gunpoint.
Particularly satisfying were the pieces on Why Lone Wolf Characters are Useless, and How To Sucessfully Base Your Next Charcter on Wolverine Or The Crow Without Looking Like a Foolis Fool. Those aren't the titles of the chapters concerned, but they summarise them nicely. I know at least one person who has played at least eight or nine different versions of Wolverine, and have winced at the number of tragic Crow-wannabes, so this book feels a lot like validation. If you too know the pain of a game where someone wears too much (ie: any) black lipstick and whiteface, then BY GOD this book is for you.
It also contains some fantastic essays in the back, all essentially on the subject of How To Not Get On The Other Gamer's Nerves And Spoil The Game With Your Idiocy. They are great, and they are worth the price alone.
This is without a doubt one of the best books White Wolf have done in years. It's very nature (it steps outside of the context of the game and speaks directly about HOW to roleplay) makes it something quite wonderfully new; the only similar book was it's companion volume, The Storytellers Handbook. And that was great too.
If you play Vampire, either as ST or player, then get this book. It's worth your time.
