In the fourth installment of the (eternal) life of Victor Decimus, we find him in New Orleans after the damage of Katrina. Victor is perpetually haunted, a word Victor finally settles upon, by Joshu; Jesus Christ, his first lover who refused the Roman officer his desires. In following with the previous books, Vampire Vow, Vampire thrall and Vampire Transgression, Victor's association with priests, and thusly Joshu continues. Life, to a degree, for Victor continues with the usual arrogance that we love from this man, but nearing the end we see another, 'softer' side to Victor; one of momentary compassion - but don't be fooled, coins have two sides. The character list is as required, mentions of Paul, the dark Kingdom - and Tiresia, Victor's creator is back (but that gets explained). Victor is the star, but the thrall relationship is explored a little with Kyle explaining some details to a priest who holds an integral part in the tale. For those who are familiar with Victor Decimus, you will adore this book, for those of you who have only just encountered him, although it is not 'essential' as key points are covered throughout, I would recommend reading the books in order so that you have an understanding of where the people in Victor's life arrive, and leave. The order is Vampire Vow, Vampire Thrall, Vampire Transgression, Vampire Maker.
I hope there is more to come!

Loved It! Love the Intelligent Slant on Vampire Victor..and.. 30 Jun 2011
By Jane - Published on Amazon.com

Did I read the same books as everyone else?! I loved it! I love Schefelbein's intelligent and theological approach to his Vampires...specifically Victor.
Victor....spurned by Jesus himself..or Joshu as he was known at the time. He never got over it...plans to revenge..avenge...forget...renounce...his Jesus..his Joshu.

His eternal life is governed by his well-spring of emotions which he can't get past.
Now in New Orleans he meets a priest who is questioning his sexual orientation. Just what Victor loves! He loves his thrall too.

The descriptive narrative of New Orleans is excellent as it is just after the flood.

The new characters are well-fleshed out. Besides Victor, we have the priest and Victor's thrall whom Victor wants to make his vampire.

Victor life(excuse the pun) is hanging...he won't ascent...and therein lies the problem.

As usual Schefelbien makes the Catholic Church, the priest and Joshu...Victor's nemisis.

I recommend all the Schefelbien Vampire books for those who value an intelligent theological argument and excellent settings from around the world.

Makes you hate to love Victor even more than ever 25 Feb 2010

I don't read books very often due to the lack of time, but I got hooked on the first book in this series(Vampire VowVampire Vow) when I took a long vacation and couldn't put it down. I anxiously waited the second...third and now this one. I wish Michael would've been a little more neutral with the "pro" religious undertones (as in Vow), but a really good read nevertheless.
