4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book of a a good vampire rpg. 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
In most rpgs vampires are powerful beings which make really good foes but are not good for playing due to their powerfulness. Vampire the masquerade solves this very neatly. All the villains , players and a good deal of the npcs are vampires themselves. Throw in the fact that the rpg leans towards Anne Rice's vampires more than Bram Stokers and you have a winner. This is the rpg for those who want to play undead creatures of the night and not nessicerily goths. The book itself is structured beutifully and includes a well balanced basic outline of the setting. Not too much to throw off a newbie and enough to satisfy a veteran. The rules are reasonably well described and not too mind-boggling when you first read them. Theres also some good short stories as well to give players a taste for the setting. To keep this review nuetral I have to say that Vampire the Masquerade has one glaringly obvious flaw. The inevitable disclaimer on page 18 is not big enough to allow for those of a really thick nature out there. Seriously though, some parts of it do tend to get thick in Vampire speak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction 16 Oct 2003
Format:Hardcover
Vampire was a beautiful, traumatic, gothic storytelling/RP game that I had heard much about but not known anything much of..until I bought this book. It is clearly set out into sections so reflecting back on things is easy, the art work is stunning, and it really does give you all you need to get a good feel for the game before you embark on playing it.
Admittedly you do need more than just the introductary book to get going, this is perfect if you're a 'dabbler' saiting a curiosity.
It is now even more beautiful to me, well worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games for storytelling 10 Dec 2003
By A. Heal
Format:Hardcover
Vampire is one of the most flexible games out there, lending itself well to politics, intrigue, investigation, high drama, horror and fights that wouldn't be out of place in the Matrix or Kill Bill. As a vampire you are an undead monster that now feeds from the people you used to be, whilst still pretending to be human. Question is, can you keep your monstrous urges in check, bend them to your will or will your thirst just consume you?

The D10 system is very straightforward and intuitive, involving nothing more than counting, and allowing for varying degrees of success. The pairing of an attribute and an ability is easy to 'guess' on the fly when you don't want to interupt the flow of the game and look in a rule book. You definitely don't need a spreadsheet to keep a track of everything.

Although this book is all you need to play the game, there a lot of source books out there to provide inspiration. All of them, including this book, are full of gorgeous artwork and small snippets of fiction to help immerse you into the atmosphere.
