This is the first full graphic novel I have ever read, and now that I've read it I am dying to read more. The drawings are fantastic overall; I think Emma Vieceli has done a great job at bringing our favourite characters to life. The depth of the emotions shown was really striking, and I felt I didn't even have to read the descriptions to know what the characters were feeling.

The plot of the original 300+ page novel was condensed quite a bit, as expected, and as a result every single scene in the graphic novel holds some importance to the overall arc of the plot. I personally would have liked to have seen more of Dimitri and Rose, and their relationship developing, but I feel there was just enough to make me want them together already.

Regarding the drawings, I thought most of the characters were brilliantly drawn. Dimitri was hot, as expected, but - dare I say - Christian was even hotter! I fell in love with him all over again in this book. Yum. His scenes were awesome and I also loved it when he was using his magic. That was also blazing hot. Excuse the pun.

I would definitely recommend reading the novel by Richelle Mead first, if you haven't done so already, as there is a lot more description and fleshing out of the plot and I think this is important to the story.

I applaud both Leigh Dragoon and Emma Vieceli for bringing my favourite series to life, so to speak. Overall they both did an amazing job! My only peeve is that my favourite quote was changed! "If I let myself love you, I won't throw myself in front of her. I'll throw myself in front of you." Is one of my favourite quotes of all time, and I was a bit upset when it read as something else. I'm not sure how necessary the change was, but I would have much preferred it if they had left it in. But anyway, go and buy this book. It's a must for your Vampire Academy collection!

Great Adaptation, For Fans & Future Fans 28 Aug 2011
By Rhianna Walker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
You'd only have to read my review of the book this graphic novel is based on to know I love the freshness Mead brought to the teen vampire fiction genre. It's one of my favorite just-for-fun reads and a series I have turned friends and family onto multiple times. Seeing it being adapted into one of my favorite mediums instantly gave it must-have status. But could the team of Dragoon and Vieceli pull it off without treading on the toes of fandom and author alike?

As far as the story goes I think Dragoon did a great job of adapting the book into a graphic novel. My only issue there is that the final few scenes felt rushed. I had to flip back and make sure I hadn't missed a page or two. Another thing I felt did not translate well was Dimitri in general. Both visually and in dialog he fell flat. He's not my favorite character already so it would have been great to at least have him be more visually compelling.

In full color from start to finish the quality on this book is fantastic. Vieceli's style treads the line between comic and manga (much like the Twilight adaptation) but aside from Mia's creepy Lolita-styled hair and clothing I didn't feel was consistent with the book it works. I definitely found Mia distracting in this, her hair in particular felt jarring. It looked out of place in a bad way. I think if that had been toned down just a little it would have been great but it kicked my love of this adaptation down from love to like.

On the whole this is a nicely done adaptation that any die-hard fan of the Vampire Academy series should snap up. If you've not read the books and have been considering it I would certainly suggest giving this a try as it is a nice starting point. Can't wait for the release of the Frostbite (VA #2) graphic novel in spring 2012!

Review of The Vampire Academy: The Graphic Novel by Richelle Mead 26 Aug 2011
By Gwenyth Love - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is most likely going to be more of a gush than a review, but that's OK right? I read, or should I say I devoured, The Vampire Academy (The first book in The Vampire Academy series) by Richelle Mead last summer. I absolutely adored it. The writing style, the characters, the story, everything was pretty much perfect. It was a great introduction into a great series that I continued to devour until the very final novel.

This graphic novel is a great companion piece to the series. You can read it without reading the series, but I would truly recommend you read the series anyhow because it will just add so much depth and story that can't possibly be displayed in these too few graphic novel pages. But as a companion piece, it is amazing, and stunning, and fabulous, and gush gush gush...

I think I am most happy with the character visualization for Rose Christian and /drool Dimitri. I'm not sure how I feel about Lissa yet...but I'm sure she will grow on me.

I'm happy to see that the graphic novel version of book 2, Frostbite, is set to be released in April of 2012. The cover is already giving me chills! I look forward to reading and experiencing every story once again, but in graphic novel format, especially the final one.

Little more than eye candy for VA fans 4 Sep 2011
By Cyndy Otty - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In my opinion, a media transition needs to stand on its own so it's not fair to compare it to the original. Though, it should maintain that general feel of the source material. This adaptation has the unfortunate distinction of being taken from one of my favorite series (though, in my humble opinion, one of the weakest books from it). However, it's been a few years since I read the book so I admit I'm slightly foggy on the details, which might be a positive thing.

Anyway, what I do remember is that I fell in love with Rose. Seeing her story brought to life this way is very refreshing, but this is a pretty light book in terms of action which leaves the art kind of lacking. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. And it's very accurate to the descriptions from the book. But I wouldn't find it nearly as interesting if I weren't already familiar with the story.

The real drawback to me is that it doesn't feel like Rose telling the story. Her snarky wit is largely omitted, which is a shame. Perhaps this is because of the necessary condensing that the book requires to be adapted, but that doesn't explain away the disjointed way her inner-dialogue is presented. Obviously large chunks of exposition and pontification can't very well be put into a thought bubble, but I am a bit wary of future books being adapted as most are far longer than this one.

Newcomers will undoubtedly be at least slightly confused by the book, but VA fans will be pleased if only for the eye candy. All things considered, this is pretty underwhelming, but I'm still interested to see the rest of the series.
