Format:Hardcover
This is quite a big Bible (imagine an A4 sheet but with about an inch off each side). I purchased for general/daily reading. My eyesight is good and I don't need glasses, but having a font size just a couple of points larger is easier for reading decent amounts of scripture. The disadvantage to this however is that it is still split column - so eight words to a column, not really any easier to read as the sentances are all broken with line breaks.

This Bible has seven high quality maps on thick paper as follows-

1. the journey of the patriarchs

2. the route of the exodus

3. the division of Israel between the twelve tribes

4. the kingdoms of Saul, David and Solomon

5. the new Jerusalem (of Bible times)

6. two page spread of map of Palestine and ministry of Jesus - very good for geographical context of Christ's journeys

7. the missionary journeys of Paul.

The maps are taken from 1986 Moody inst. Chicago.

This version has a 12,000 word concordance- which really toally insufficient if you want to do a thorough search or study (though an exhaustive concordance cannot be expected). Most importantly for me it does not have the centre column cross reference. Personally I was a little dissapointed as the cross reference would have been really handy but then again- this is too big as a travel Bible so I can use my computer for reference anyway. This large print edition is good if you have all the other study facilities you need, but for a young believer I would advise getting the "Reformation Study Bible-Esv by R. C. Sproul and Keith A. Mathison". This Bible is really designed for people with failing eyesight who will read slowly.

Format:MP3 CD
As ESV is the main translation I use and memorise, I used the 'listen' function on the ESV website for ages - but that has the obvious limitation of playing only through the website, rather than for download. I requested this Hear the Word Audio Bible (ESV) for a birthday in order to put it on my computer and mp3 player to listen on the train, while cycling or just while moving round the house. For that, having an audio Bible comes highly recommended by this user.

As to this particular audio Bible, the reading is immensely sensible: following the sense of the text, without being overly dramatic or giving emphasis in strange places (as Max McLean (Listener's Bible) does in my opinion). It is one of the only audio Bibles I know to have no distracting background music. The pace also seems appropriate. The actor David Heath is American, but for this British listener, his accent is not so strong or distinctive as to be offputting, nor too dull!

The mp3 CDs come in a fairly thin zip-shut carry case, which is practical and light. That said, if you have an mp3 player with large capacity, you wouldn't need to use the CDs more than once anyway, to copy them to that for personal use.

I can't think of any negatives: I thoroughly recommend this.

cheap and cheerful 14 July 2010
Format:Imitation Leather
Ordinarily I use the New International Version (NIV), but I got this Bible to see what the new English Standard Version (ESV) had to offer. I don't claim to be qualified to compare the versions at any deep level - I'm sure there is plenty of material available on the internet arguing the pros and cons of different textual sources, the finer points of Greek and Hebrew grammar etc.

However, as an informed reader my first impression is that it is actually very similar in style and 'feel' to the NIV. The only real difference I noticed was that occasionally this version used slightly less elegant English, saying things in a more round-about way which I presume reflected a wish to stay true to the original text. On the plus side, there seemed to be a few more useful footnotes than in a standard NIV. These helped to clarify Greek/Hebrew meanings, explained terms of weight and measurement etc, or gave alternate readings where the translation was ambiguous. Overall, though, it didn't seem better or worse than the NIV, just slightly different. Given the current popularity of the NIV, I would imagine this new version will find it hard to make its mark.

This edition does have a few nice added features; there is a friendly "What the Bible is all about" page at the beginning, a paragraph of introduction at the start of each of the books and a couple of maps at the end. There is a short article outlining the background to the ESV translation, and some Bible reading notes, which you may or may not appreciate.

As regards quality, you know you're not getting the top-of-the-range product if you choose an 'imitation leather' cover. Indeed the text is a bit cramped, and there is a slightly 'cheap' look to the paper but it seems sturdy enough - I've had this one a few weeks now, and it's showing no signs of falling apart. Not a bad buy if you want to check out the ESV version.

A good read, but a little unbelievable and imposing.
This book begins really well and ends even better, but I feel it looses the way somewhere in the middle. Read more

What you'd expect for the price
This is good value for money for a paperback bible. At this price, the binding is glued not stitched, but you can lay the Bible open flat without the book closing up again. Read more

ESV Bible
This is an easy-to-use bible. As a UK English speaker though, I did find it slightly irritating to find it to be American English. Why are there so few UK English online bibles?
